What do you consider the most important basis for a lasting friendship?
I have always felt it was trust. If you cannot trust someone, you cannot be a true friend to them, nor can they be to you.....so what's your opinion?
ok, so thus far we have forgiveness, putting aside your own needs, and dependability.... interesting answers all.
Somehow, I am thinking trust still covers them all, you forgive trusting that your friend will forgive you, you put aside your needs trusting that your friend will some day do as much for you, and you trust that you can depend on your friend.... any other opinions out there?

Trust. I hate to admit this, but my sister has lied about so many things that has hurt the entire family. I dread being around her over the holidays. Both people in any relationship must be able to trust each other or there is not much of a relationship.

Personally, I've found dependability or lack there of can make or break any relationship ~ if you can't count on someone or they on you then trust and loyalty seemingly fall away as well? What's left is not much, if anything...

The ability to listen to the other person rant, even when you really want to rant yourself. And the ability to understand that your friend might not want to hear your complaints right now, and to put your problems aside for a bit in order to be there for your friend.
