Why are we fighting in a war?
Why are we fighting a war in the middle east?

I used to think I knew. We were attacked.
On occasion, I thought it might be the oil thing, but then that didn't really make sense since the prices kept skyrocketing (BTW, why isn't anyone complaining about the prices right now? They aren't much less than they were with Bush).
Now, I seriously have no idea why we're "fighting." It was my understanding that Obama was going to use his super president powers to fly to the Whitehouse and send the troops home. I haven't kept up on the current information because frankly, it depresses me, but as far as I know, he hasn't really done much to change anything there.
I guess I'm wasting my time here because I can't really answer your question. I am sorry!

Yes, because we were attacked. It should also be mentioned that with the allied forces in Iraq schools, businesses and daily lives have been able to return to some normality. The media conveniently forgets to report this. Unfortunately the cowards hide within their own communities so this makes it a difficult war to fight.

The spectacular disinformation purveyed by US media is much in evidence in the answers I see.
Bush said he had evidence of al Qaeda involvement in 9/11 but, when the Taliban offered to hand over Osama and the other leadership on its production, failed to provide it and has still not produced what he did not have. He instead invaded to prove to the world, especially in the US, that the US was still the world's biggest bully and to avoid finding himself with this scion of his Saudi sponsors on his hands in front of his angry constituency.
In no time, however, his troops had the Taliban and ObL trapped in the Afghan-Paki mountains and capture was imminent. Again terrified that ObL might be captured, he desperately invented one nonsensical reason after another why troops needed to be transferred away from capturing ObL to invade innocent Iraq.
You are fighting, not a war, but a diversion intended to achieve a number of goals - a few among them :
- persuade the US population that there is a continued threat which justifies your lack of real democracy (you have a corporate plutocracy) and even more draconian curbs on civil liberties - desperately needed after the collapse of the USSR,
- and also justify diversion of such a huge part of government revenues to your arms and attack industries (the bullshit says defence) and so little to your people that in many respects, the world's richest country has third world conditions,
- establish a wedge in the oil-rich Shia Iraqi south between the oil-rich Shia Iranians and the oil-rich Shia of north east Saudi - who might get together and (heaven forbid!) achieve democracy,
Obama might have intended reform but has found that the power does not lie in the Presidency or the Senate or Congress but in the plutocracy which plunders the nation even more efficiently in war and renders the veneer of democracy a joke.
