does anyone elses cat do this?

hi you need to picture this its the middle of the night, we are soundly sleeping well as best we can with all the cats on the bed, scruff wakes up and decides it time to lick our ears, he stands on me or my husband and starts licking, i hide under the covers he then starts pulling my hair with his teeth getting really close to my scalp, gets some hair and pulls it really hard, he only licks my hubbys ears hes got no hair to pull, we think he might be getting a bit fruity he has been snipped, he came to us as a stray he was nasty at first about 18 months old, hes been here fr 3 years now, and hes quite a friendly chap now, any ideas why he might do this

LICKING???? You are lucky. I have one that comes and stands over me and clamps his teeth firmly into my chin. I know that all that I can do is to keep still until he lets go...otherwise I would require hospital treatment for a square inch of flesh missing from my face.

He loves me very much. I know that. He NEVER goes anywhere near my eyes.

We have a cat that we took in just over a year ago who was a feral stray. He's adapted wonderfully, he's extremely affectionate and friendly with us, but at night he will lick my husband's armpit and then chomp him. It's like he's basting him first!

He will also often curl up around the top of my head, then give me a bite. He bites hard but not hard enough to break skin.

Cats often bite when they're affectionate, think of it as a kiss but just rougher than what we would give them. Licking is grooming and a sign of affection as well. It's the first thing they know from their mothers, even before their eyes are open.

Sounds like he is after a little TLC in the night. Mine sometimes wakes me by nudging my hand, but not very often now. I think she got a little lonely in the night and for a time, I got regularly woken in the wee small hours for a cuddle. Mine has recently started licking me too before I go to sleep at night. Thankfully not for too long and only on the hand.

I did have a cat that bit my hair at the scalp while I was sleeping. He didn't like the fact that I was sleeping and not paying any attention to him. Eventually, he would calm down if I talked to him and pet him until he would curl up on my pillow and go to sleep.

Sounds like he is grooming you. Our cat sleeps with us every night (in the middle, head on pillow, covers pulled up to his chin) and we will wake up to find him "washing" our eyebrows, etc. It's a sign of affection. Take it as a compliment.

Yes, this grooming is normal. One of the things people forget about our relationship with cats is that we, in a way, keep them as permanent kittens, by feeding them. Hence the grooming.

No, mine doesn't do that. She doesn't really ever lick us. She'll sleep on the foot of the bed, but usually she'll sleep somewhere else.

Hes grooming you, just as you groom him, it's a sign he trusts you and hes happy to be part of you're family now.

this sounds a bit weird but he is checking to see if you are still alive!

my cat sniffs my hair and face if i let him in the room at night.
