Not specific enough in your question. Long range for hunting? 400 yards is about max with a 308 and decent ammo. Target,heck 1000 yards if you have the right set up. So, for hunting you don't need a heavy barrel, for target at extreme range you want a heavier barrel,more weight in the rifle,adjustable stock,solid and workable receiver that you should have centerline indexed,face trued and jeweled. So, lets go with the extreme range and say you want to look at Remington 700,older Winchester,Sako,and Weatherby/Howa actions,or even the 1903 or 1917. Start there and add a good trigger and an air gauged heavy barrel,learn to hand load for it and you should be able to get decent with about 3-5 years worth of practice.

me and my dad have shot out to 800 yards dropping elk with no problem but trigger job, floating barrel, and a pretty good scope is good but practice is a must

any brand will work its just how well you know your gun and its capabilities
