Mom diagnosed w/ Emphysema at 70?
I have known for at least 2 or 3yrs that my Mom had COPD/Emphysema. I knew because she is a smoker (a pack or more a day), she gets out of breath easily and has for 2 plus yrs, and has also in that time coughed so hard she is choking with every cig she lights; sometimes even when she's not smoking. She has a doctor appt tomorrow w/ her regular doctor. I know at this point she needs a pulmonary doctor and have more tests ran. So far all she's had is a chest X-ray. Any advice to a daughter who cares and she lives with me? I know she has to quit smoking but what else can be done at home? She barely leaves the house and does NO physical activity.

a pulmonologist will not do her anymore good than her regular doctor, the damage is done, and there is literally nothing that a pulmonologist can do at this point, that a regular doctor can't. Yes, she needs to quit smoking, she should have years ago, but at this point all they can do is treat her symptoms, they are not going to make her better. Inhalers, nebulizers, medications etc, all can be ordered by her doctor, even home oxygen. She does NO physical activity because she literally can't, she hasn't enough oxygen in her body to be able to. It is unfortunate and sad that she's done this to herself by smoking, but the damage is done, nothing can change that, you need to accept that and do what you can to make her comfortable, and her "regular" doctor can do that.
