What are some good books for raising freethinking children?

My wife and I are both scientists and I am an atheist. What are some good books we can read to our toddlers on science and the origins of everything.

There are plenty of books out there regarding the science behind "how things work". Babies and toddlers are still busy learning WHAT everything is, and aren't ready to learn WHY everything is, but when they are ready for that point, there are plenty of resources out there. I posted some links to some children's books about why things are, and how things work, although my daughter is not even 2 years old yet, and I haven't read any of them personally to recommend them.

I will offer my two cents about raising freethinking children, however:

It has been my experience that people who try too hard to raise "freethinking" children, often raise children to think just like themselves, which really isn't allowing the child to "think freely". I think in order to raise a truly "free-thinking" child, you need to expose your child to all sorts of ideas and religions, theories, etc. to give them the opportunity to make their own decisions about life.
