The Taurus PT-92 is not a good pistol.
It is a GREAT PISTOL!!
I had one of the old models made in the late 1980's, the magazine release was located on the lower left grip panel rather than behind the trigger-guard.
That pistol would feed anything short of a fired case. And it was accurate as well. I won't claim it was bullseye competition accurate but in rapid fire i could pump two 16-round magazines into an 8" paper plate at 25 yards in just a few seconds.
In addition to the accuracy and reliability, that PT-92 was the most polite semi-auto I've ever owned. i could lay a piece of newspaper on the ground and almost all of the fired brass would land on the paper in a pretty small pile/ (My Colt Stainless officers' ACP throws brass along a 180-degree arc from 6' straight ahead to 6' straight to the rear.)
I especially liked the fact that I had a choice of carrying my PT-92 in either hammer-down Double-Action Mode or C0cked-and-Locked in Single-Action mode.
The later model Taurus PT-92's added a hammer drop safety to the safety choices. What can beat those choices?
I am not positive how closely related the currently manufactured PT-92's are to the Beretta M-92, They've both evolved in different directions, but the originals were exact duplicates of an early Model 92 Beretta. In fact the pistols were built in a factory built by Beretta and on Beretta made machinery. (Beretta had built a factory in Brazil to fill the requirements of a Brazilian military contract and sold it to Taurus when the contract was filled.) Quality was equal to Beretta in every respect. In fact I'd say that Taurus might well have a quality edge over Beretta. After all, I've never heard of a Taurus slide failing catastrophically the way quite a few Berettas have.
The Taurus PT-92 and the Beretta M-92 for that matter are not over-sized. They are full-sized service pistols with 16-+1 round capacity. They are not and were never intended to be considered compact concealed carry weapons. With attention to detail and good gunleather one can easily conceal a PT-92, but it's intended use is for open carry by uniformed police or military personnel.
If I were in the market for a service sized 9mmP pistol, I seriously doubt if I'd look any further than the nearest Taurus PT-92.

Some experts consider the Taurus to be as good, or better than it's "krunchenticker" clone brother, the Beretta 92, but how far does that go when the U.S. military are finally beginning to admit the failings of the "Mighty 9" and, beginning with Special Ops units, are looking elsewhere for a more serviceable weapon. If you are considering a purchase, you would be better off, for somewhat more money, purchasing better quality pistols, such as H-K, Glock, SIG, or even, as one gent mentioned, the veteran Browning pattern P-35 High-Power.

I have a PT92 and a PT99, both purchased about 20 years ago. The difference between the two it the 99 has an adjustable rear sight. I have several thousand rounds through it without a single malfunction.
As for being over-sized, it is a full sized service pistol, not a pocket plinker. It was designed and developed in the days before polymers became big. It is the same size and weight of the current combat pistol used by the US military.

I have two Taurus revolvers in .357 and .44 Mag calibers. They are as accurate as any other handgun by whatever manufacturer out there. They've never given me any problem and I would expect the Taurus pistols are the same.I don't personally care for the PT-92(or the Beretta pistols of the same design). They are too chunky for my hand. The best handgun for you is the one you prefer and the one that is in your hand.
And I'm curious as to why someone who professes his dislike for Taurus handguns and lists his qualifications as being a Glock (among other) armorer doesn't tell you of the Glock reputation for some pretty serious catastrophic failures of their pistols.I have personally seen 2 Glock pistols completely blow the slide off the frame.Never saw that from a Taurus.

The only good Taurus handguns are their Judge Public Defender (and a few other Judges), Raging Bull revolvers and the PT92. The rest of their handguns are just marginal or garbage.
They do have an awesome warranty program for the life of the weapon.
I used the Beretta M9 in the US military and was NOT impressed by it: the Taurus PT92 is what M9 should be.
It's no clone; just revised to be better in function and just as reliable as it's glamorous sexy Italian cousin.

The Taurus PT is an awesome pistol at a great price. I have owned two and I have NEVER had a problem with either one.

Taurus sucks. Their customer service sucks. I know 2 people who had 24/7's they both broke within 3 months, it took them over 6 months to fix and were hard to sell because they don't hold their value. I had a 22 rifle that wouldn't hit a 4x4 inch wood block at 25 yards from a bench rest! I sent it back, it took them over 9 months to realize that they couldn't fix it so they sent me another rifle. I sold it immediately and have NEVER bought another piece of junk Taurus.

I dislike Taurus because of their poor quality control. Some of their firearms turn out nice, others are junk. But you can never tell which one you are going to get. And, if you have problems, you send the firearm in for repair, and you don't see it again for 4 months or so (and that is during the non busy season).

It is a bigger gun. I am not a fan of the thicker grips. I do think the Taurus makes a better Beretta than Beretta does. But that is just me...
