How to keep cat off of top of kitchen cabinets?

I have two cats that love to go up on top of my kitchen cabinets and I would really love to hear from other cat owners who have had this problem and solved it.Please don't suggest moth balls I hate the smell. My New Year's resolution was "to take back my house from the cats" I have also done the spay water bottle thing (they laugh at me). Thanks to all who answer.

Update:

Oh Rapid fire you did make me laugh!! I think I solved my problemo,(for Now) I got some baskets and fake strands of leaves and threw them up there, above my cabinets. The cats found elsewhere to go(for Now). Thanks for all the info!!

Duct tape worked for me. It doesn't require you to sit & wait for the cat to trespass, as squirt guns & scolding do. We placed a few pieces of tape with the sticky side up, around on the kitchen counter. When the cat steps on it, they won't like the sticky, & will stop climbing up there. It's a good idea to take a bit of the stickiness off, or you'll have the problem someone else mentioned, of the pet getting too stuck up with it. Stick the tape to some fabric (chair, carpet, your shirt) & pull it off a few times, till it's not quite so sticky but still tacky enough to adhere lightly to their feet.

I have a spray bottle of water and whenever my cat does something she shouldn't do I say, "NO NO" and spray her with the water until she stops. Maybe you should increase the water? Just a few spritzes might not work, you may have to soak them.

Also there are devices that emit a sound that humans can't hear but cats and dogs can hear that annoy them and are set off by a motion detector. My mom's friend had a couple of cats that loved to jump on counters and bookshelves, and she bought a few of these devices. Once the cats jumped on the counter the device emitted the annoying sound, and then the cats jumped off. Now they don't jump on the counters anymore. I think you can get them at pet stores.

If they jump on the counters because food is up there, try keeping the food covered by a towel or lid. Also not ever giving your cats table scraps can help cut their cravings for people food.

I have a 70 pound Black Lab and two cats. The dog, believing himself to be in charge, chases the cats when they go for the counter top. Yeah, right; they do this deliberately to get the dog to chase them as a prelude to mutual grooming sessions.

So I get involved and take the errant cats off the counter and bowl them across the very slippery floor on their butts. Yeah, right; the instant I leave the room they are back up there.

Then I tried the squirt bottle (now in the garbage). Yeah, right; they started pissing in the laundry hamper and in our underwear drawers in retaliation.

Next was the application of tin foil to the counter top. Yeah, right; they knocked that onto the floor at kept us up all night taking turns with the dog sliding on it and crashing into the lower cupboard doors.

What next? Oh, citrus spray. Yeah, right; at least their feet don't smell so bad anymore and their litter dish has a lemony odour to it..

Double sided tape - that will work. Yeah, right; had to have the dog shaved to get it out of his fur.

Rattle can and sharp loud noises were the next tactic. Yeah, right; the cat would look behind me to see if the dog was coming too. If not, it just sat there and waited for me to bowl it's arrsse across the floor. Then it jumped back up on the counter and stared at me.

Okay; try yelling "NO" at them. Yeah, right; it was at this point that I came to the realization that cats do not understand the English language, and much like people in foreign countries cannot grasp English no matter how loudly or slowly that you speak it.

At this point I gave up and bought a can of those disinfectant counter wipes and started leaving dirty dishes in the sink. As long as they're up there anyway they may as well scrape the GD dishes.

Dog training are excellent and very helpful to build you a stronger relationship with your dog. Read more https://tr.im/dupnI

After I started training my dog, he became very attached to me and loves to stay by side as long as he can. But just going to them won't help. You have to practice what they teach you outside of the class and you need to keep up with it at least every now and then after the class ends otherwise they'll just go back to previous habits. This course is a really good place to go for dog obedience classes. It get's your dog around other people and dogs to socialize while getting the training you need. As for electric collars, I would say to not get one. In my experience, they're only a negative effect on your dog. I mean of course you're going to need to correct your dog, but being positive and encouraging your dog works a lot faster and easier.

Every dog is different, so unless you have a german shepherd or a really smart dog, it might take a while to train her. You might get frustrated with her, but go easy. She's still a puppy and has a lot of energy. A backyard or somewhere to run will help her get rid of a lot of energy that might cause her to misbehave from boredom.

The thing you could do is if out are out and in get some tin-foil or somebakingg trays but the ones that have holes in them and gust put them there you could also use this for chairs or anything. When they jump they wont like it and they will jump down and they will soon learn that they are not aloud up here.
