Do Athiests believe in ghosts?

The answer is probably no, but i got very curious. Since they believe in no higher power (i think) or magic or anything do they believe in ghosts? Please correct me on any wrong info i dont really know a lot about them. If any athiest does, how do you explain ghosts then? (No offense, please dont scold me, just wondering. thought it was interesting)

Thanks! :)

    Yes, they can.

An atheist is a person that believes there is no God. The definition goes no farther. They may or may not believe in many other things.

I won't speak for others, but I do not. I do not believe there is such a thing as a soul which can be separated from the body.

For what it's worth, the belief in an all powerful god and the belief in spirits are two entirely different things. I imagine there are many who don't believe in a god but have no problem with the idea of spirits or ghosts.

Atheism is the lack of belief in deities. That's all. Taoists are largely atheistic, but original Taoism is heavy on ancestor veneration, which, to me, implies a belief in life after death of some kind. Many schools of buddhism are atheistic, but some still accept re-incarnation, and so, perhaps spirits that have left one incarnation but haven't entered another yet. There's still lots more official kinds of atheistic faiths I could mention. And individual non-affiliate atheists have their own ideas. Again, all atheism is, is the lack of belief in a God or gods. Everything other than that is fair game.

The only common belief that atheists hold as a collective group is a disbelief in any higher powers.

Anything else (ghosts, magic, souls, etc) is a personal belief.

I'd say that many of us don't, including me. But, some atheists believe in energy transferring forms in ways that cannot be explained. Some believe in portals, like those in space, that may hold secrets that scientists will one day discover.

I myself can't find a way to believe in ghosts or spirits of any kind, though.

Some do, some don't...a ghost is a spiritual thing, a person doesn't necessarily need to believe in god/desses to believe in spirituality...

    IE-animism

'atheism' is a Greek word that means (literally) no belief in god(s), it's an adjective more than anything.

Atheists don't/shouldn't believe in anything of the supernatural because that is all bogus. So in my opinion you can not be a true atheist if you believe in ghosts, gods, angels, or anything along that line. They are more logical thinkers who don't agree with the bible or a god because it is all such unreliable/unbelievable information. I am not really an atheist but I am certainly not a christian nor will I ever be.

  • Atheism is only to do with deities. Ghosts are not deities and they, as well as an afterlife of sorts, don't necessarily have to be linked to one.

At the very least, at least ghosts are generally based on people who once existed.

I cannot speak for all atheists, but I personally don't.

It's still entirely possible an atheist believes in a soul/spirit, such things aren't directly related to a deity.

    Some do. Others don't. I don't.

Please keep in mind that there ARE religious and/or spiritual atheists. Believing in ghosts, souls, afterlives, and so not do NOT require a belief in god or gods.
