Using sun bed / machine for very pale skin..?
Hi all im very pale skinned and would like to condition my skin so that when i go abroad i can actually go out in the sun without factor 50 and get a tan... i wouldn't also mind looking a lil browner :) im not talking about going 3 days a week or anything just every little helps... how long do you think i should go on there for? use what cream if any? and if you get different machines in these places what one? ive never walked into these places before so ignore my lack in knowledge... all help would be great. i burn very easy but just go red, then go white after a few days.....i think this is lack of holidays in hot countries when i was little too ;) Scott.

I used to manage a tanning salon and am myself very pale skinned, so I guess the job didn't match the way I looked but customers who were not die hard tanners came in and respected the advice I gave as I had the same skin type. You MUST be very careful when using the beds as fair skin types are not used to tanning. The maximum I would recommend is 3 minutes. This may not sound a lot but bear in mind that you have concentrated sunshine (UVA rays) all within these machines. Going on a sunbed is the equilvelant of going out in the sun for hours. There is no quick tan solution on the sunbeds if you want quick but safe fix then use a self tanning lotion, there's loads of great ones out now.
If you still want to use the beds there are two types, stand up ones and lay down ones. These each have different benefits and also down to preference as well. They can get very hot if they have been used a lot previously. The lay down ones help if you find you legs don't tan very well as your blood circulates more easily (have you ever wondered why you tan while you're working in the garden etc. your blood is flowing faster and carrying more oxygen around your body).
Your skin is made up of cells and within the cells is a substance called melanin. Not sure if you've ever heard of it. It's this substance that helps your skin to tan. People with dark skin types have cells rich and full of melanin, which is why they tan easily. Fair skin people have very little melanin and therefore don't tan very well. The Melanin reacts with the UVA rays and over 24 hours your tan develops. There are creams that you can use on the sunbeds which help to stimulate the production of Melanin, these have no sunscreen so shouldn't be used outdoors. If you use these each time they can help to stimulate the Melanin production and help build up a base tan. They're pretty much the same as each other from one brand to another but I would avoid what they call "hot or tingle creams". These make your skin very hot,red and bring your blood vessels to the surface of your skin, the idea being that more oxygen is circulated and increases Melanin levels. For fair skin types this can be very uncomfortable and also quite scary when you see how red your skin goes. It isn't burnt just feels very hot and you need to get a cool shower to take the heat out of it. As your tan progresses you have more Melanin in your skin which is why you tan more easily in the sun. There are a few sites online giving you more information on how your skin tans. When you know how it all works it gives you a better idea of how to get safe results.
You will still tan if you use a high factor as it's UVA and UVB rays outside. You must still protect your skin in the sun.
You must keep an eye on any moles or blemishes that appear or change size or shape or become itchy or sore. Using a sunbed can be beneficial to boost vitamin D levels during winter but also are very hazardous is you go silly. People with eczema or skin problems can benefit from the minimum session each week or once every so often and it has been proven to keep these conditions at bay if done correctly.
At the end of the day our skin type, being fair skinned, is the way we are and you shouldn't risk your health. There are benefits of using the beds but they are massively out weighed by the dangers. Sunbeds seriously age your skin as well, I know it's not life threatening looking like a handbag before your time but it is scary how much UV ages your skin.
Hope all this helps

I live in Australia, where 1 in 2 people get skin cancer in their lives - that's a whopping 50% of the population. I have had it and I never ever go out into the sun. Every bit of tanning, be it from the sun or tanning beds, does you skin damage. You will pay for it later in life with prematurely aged skin, which looks leathery and awful. Don't do it! Enjoy your beautiful pale skin and protect it. As a redhead, you are even more likely to suffer skin damage. Every time you get burnt increases your chance of getting skin cancer later in life. Tanning beds won't protect you from any of it. My advice, use a good quality tanning lotion if you must have that tanned look. But when you are out and about, use 30+ sun screen, wear a hat and try to avoid the hottest part of the day altogether.

i wouldn't recommend it, i am in the same situation and unfortunately i'm going to have to stay like this... I worked at a tanning place for a while, and tanned almost every day. And surprisingly can get a really really nice tan, i used really good lotion, the thing is you have to go consecutively you cant just go a couple times a week and see results, unless youve already built up a base tan, but its like an every day sort of thing. it gets really expensive, and is dangerous. so just think about how bad you really want it, if its worth the risks or not. a really good lotion helps a LOT and you need to start out slowly, build up your time and don't get burnt.
