22-250 remington vs 223. remington?

I am looking into getting myself a varmint rifle and for a while people were telling me to get the 22-250 rem, and i did extensive research on this caliber and i was very impressed. But for the past couple weeks people have been changing there mind and telling me to stay away from the 22-250 rem and sticking with the 223. rem. Now i love both cartridges, i have hunted with both, i have taking it both out many times for target shooting but i was just a little more impressed with the 22-250 probably because of the speed and longer reach. Which one do you suggest? which one do you shoot? why? I was looking into getting it in the Remington Model 700 VS SF II and my shots will be taken anywhere from close out to 500 yards. Most shots will be from 100-350 yards

Good answers above. Have you considered other uses. The .223 is much cheaper to shoot and brass/ammo is plentiful as to date. Also, the .223 shoots a heavier bullet for windy days and bigger game. The .243 is worth a look too.

Shooting in 10mph winds will play hell with a tiny 40gr 22-250 shooting 500yds.

Define varmint. If you mean coyote and smaller, get the 223. Nothing you are going to shoot will be able to tell it's moving a little slower than a 22-250 and our local hardware store still has Remington UMC FMJ's for $8.99 a box. If you are talking deer, while a 223 put in the right spot will drop a deer (and I will argue that on here as long as I'm here) you might want to go with the 243 or 308 even if a 223 is legal where you hunt. (It ain't in some places) A 243 has less kick than a 308, but if you are worried about the recoil of a 308 you might want to shoot some one else's 243 before buy'n one. Good luck. Dave

Both are great rounds, with the 22-250 having an advantage in velocity. If you don't handload the 22-250 will cost more to feed. If you do handload after the 22-250 brass will set you back more and you will use more powder to get the extra velocity.

Both will serve you well at the ranges you are talking about but the 22-250 will serve you better when you stretch your shots out to 500 and farther.

In my opinion its a trade off. If you are going to shoot ALOT and economics is an issue get the .223.

If money isnt so much the issue get the 22-250. Just my opinion.

The 22-250 is the superior cartridge.... Then again - maybe not!... The upside to the .223 is the cost of the ammunition... In bulk .223 is very inexpensive.... So you have to ask yourself this... How much money do I want to spend?... A box of .22-250 starts at $20 a box and much more for the better grade hunting ammo.... Of course better quality .223 is pricey too..... The upside to that cheap .223 bulk ammo is that you can get an huge amount of trigger time in practicing without stressing about the cost of the ammo... Yeah the .22-250 has the superior ballistics characteristics but realize the .223 is no slug either. Its got plenty of critter slaying power out to long distances......

This .223 cartridge guide is geared a little more for target shooter but is still valuable for you if you hunt.....

Check out the cost of bulk ammo here.....

I happen to like the .223 a lot... My reasons are most likely different than yours... I hunt and target shoot with bolt action rifles chambered in .223 Remington... But also many of my other semi-auto rifles like the Ruger Mini 14, Saiga's and AR15 rifles are chambered in .223 also.... I would rather stick with as few cartridge choices as possible... This keeps life a little simpler.....

This is a question that gets brought up quite a bit. Both of these calibers will be able to shoot the distance you want. A lot of the time it isn't how far the gun can shoot its how far you can shoot accurately. I shoot a .223 Rem and that is what i would recommend. I recommend a .223 because shooting .223 is a lot cheaper than shooting a 22-250. Have fun with whichever one you choose.

Either is a great varmint round, but the .223 ammo is WAY more accessable and much less expensive. The .223 is going to be tough to use past 350 yards, but the odds are your going to be shooting closer anyway.

If you really like the 22-250, go get one. My opinion, i stay with the .223.

    * The 22-250 is a better choice, however the 243 Winchester is the Best Choice it has a Greater variety of bullet weights to choose from for Hunting Big Game, Varmints, and Serious Target Shooting at a maximum range of 1,000 yards.* You will get more Value, and Use from going with the 243 Winchester.*

could compramise and go with a 243. The 243 will do better on windy days because heavier bullets and if you ever wanted to hunt dear or wild boar or something it can wrok for them too..223,.22-250, 243 can go wrong with either. The 22-250 may have shorter barrel life of the bunch. Also i would suggest a marlin xs7 if you go with 243. Its the best bang for your buck. reminton owns marlin now and it has similar features. Its like a savage and remington, features of both. You can get it in a camo option too. Ive talked to several guys that own them and its most likely what im getting as well in 243 for coyotes.

I have a Remington Sendero with a stainless fluted 26 inch barrel chambered in 7mm RUM. This gun rocks. It shoots a 3/8 group at 100 yards. I could not imagine shooting a .223 with this gun when a 22-250 is available at the same price. I bet that a Sendero chambered in 22-250 would be sweeeeet. Great gun in a great chambering.

i was told the 223 is very reliable for those distances...they say a 22-250 will burn up a barrel quickly
