Good Quality Cat Food!?

My mom is unwilling to switch to canned cat food...so my poor babies have to eat dry kibble..Right now their eating Purina Naturals (full of all those awful fillers)..if I can at least supplement their diet with canned cat food, will that help? I'm only 15 so I'm on a major budget, but I found Authority canned cat food (I know it's not great, but for the price, it's much better than that Purina crap...right??)

Are there any other budget friendly canned cat foods that are good quality?

I know of all sorts of brands that are really good, but I can't afford them right now :(

The next one I 'may' be able to afford would be Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul - not perfect, but definitely better...

Well, my major question is; if their diet is supplemented with canned cat food, will that be better than just Purina Naturals alone?

Is there a kind of dry kibble that is decent quality? I heard they all contain fillers, but there must be something better than what they have now, right?

Thanks in advance!! :)

Yes, some wet food will be better than none at all. Sometimes you can catch Blue Buffalo and some of the other quality brands on sale... so keep an eye out. Switching brands doesn't really matter too much with wet food as long as you're sticking with comparable brands. You're correct that Authority isn't the best out there, but I would place it above Purina. Chicken Soup also has a dry brand that's comparable in price to the Purina they're getting now and it's a much better quality food. Try to see if your mom will be willing to switch their dry food to this brand. You're on the right track, and I realize there's only so much you can do in your situation. Thank you so much for caring about the health of your kitties!

Authority isn't so bad - if price is a real concern (and of course it is for you) it's good in both dry and the canned. It has no by products (you don't want to feed those, it's a very low quality protein source). The dry does have brewer's rice and corn gluten meal, but those are after the real chicken and chicken meal. Is it the best food in the world? No. Is it significantly better than what you'll find in the grocery store? Yes, it is. The Chicken Soup would be better still, but you'll be doing your cat a favor if you can switch from Purina to the Authority, and sneak some canned Authority in there too. We all do the best we can with the money we have to work with!

While my preference is to feed the canned like Wellness, EVO, etc. I've bought the Authority canned when money is tight and I'm feeding 5 foster kittens who'll eat 6 or more 6-ounce cans a day. That gets pretty pricey, no matter how you look at it.

Source(s): many years of cat rescue (and feeding a mostly canned premium diet).

Go to Petco, I noticed they carry some VERY good brands like Wellness which do not have those bad fillers. You may want to ask a sales associate that works there to point you to the better brands as they do carry the bad ones too. If the price is a little higher, it's a good indicator too that you're getting better food. It's SO worth it though for your cat's health. Maybe you can give your cats a little canned food as a treat now and then as it's good for them to get the water content. I'm actually using Purina One Sensitive Stomach formula for a super finicky old Persian cat that likes this food. Unfortunately he's turned his nose up at some better brands that I was bringing home. 'ORIJEN' is another great brand if you can find it (I had to buy mine at a feed store that sells horse food too!) it's grain-free.

Actually, your opinion really doesn't matter. If your cats do not agree, they won't eat.

So in evaluating foods, look at the label. And to help you, I have posted a link to an article from the Cornell Vet school.

For a wet food treat, I got one brand that I though was decent, but not the better one. They loved it, and when I got what I thought from the label was better as far as the meat portion, they wouldn't touch it. And both were listed as beef in gravy. So go figure. And they love the shredded beef variety, and will not touch the meaty bits variety. Same manufacturer.

Purina Naturals have chicken meal as the first ingredient. So what is it? Chicken meal is often used in dry cat food. The quality of the protein will depend on the type and amount of chicken meat in the mixture, as well as the amount of bone and connective tissue processed with the meat. Although better than chicken by-product meal, chicken meal is generally a lesser quality of protein source than chicken meat.

So at least corn is not the first ingredient. While I may probably get flamed for this, IAMS Original in the orange bag has chicken as the first ingredient. Science Diet indoor formula has Chicken by-product meal as the first ingredient.

But again, if your cat does not agree with your choice, your opinion won't matter.

Forget the grocery store or WalMart, go to any pet supplies store and start looking at lables. You need a high protein content 30% or higher, and no corn or grain in the first 4 ingredients. Cats can't digest corn so it's a useless filler, and since the ingredient list goes from largest to smallest, you want as little grain as possible.

    Good foods---

Wysong Vitality (silver bag) -- $8

    Royal Canin Siamese 38 -- $12

Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul, kitten variety -- $9

    EVO - $17

    Fromm - $9

    Wellness -- $12

Wellness Core -- $8 (the bag is smaller)
