Best way going about getting into Veterinary School?

Ok so here's my dilemma. I am in my 4th year of college, with one year left to completing my Bachelor's degree in Psychology. However, now I would rather not do psychology after all. I have been working in the field and have realized that these sort of jobs are just not for me. I would really like to work with animals and become a veterinarian however, I know that I'm more thank likely not qualified to be admitted into one now. Would it be better for me to start out by getting my Master's in Animal Science then applying for Veterinary school? What are your general thoughts, I do plan on talking to me adviser but just wondering what you all think. Thanks!

Update:

Edit: I have not taken all of them, but I still have a year left to finish what I haven't. In order to do this I would need to take 20 crs. my last year! If I get my Master's degree first would I still have a chance of getting into veterinary school after I finish?

avma.org and aavmc.org have lots of info

first off you would need to make sure all prereqs are met. If they are or if you can finish them by next year and have a good GPA and take the GRE I would apply to vet school next year. Having a degree in psychology won't hurt. Bio related degrees would give you the best background, but admissions people don't care what your degree is as long as admission requirements are met. I have people in my class with degrees in english, spanish and theater.

If you do have to do a master's try for a course based one, instead of one that requires research, if research is involved you may not finish in exactly 2 years then if you get into vet school you would have to make the decision of not finishing the masters or go to vet school later. Many people who don't have a high enough GPA or decide late in their college career do a master's and are able to get into vet school.

As an aside, I don't know anything about the field of psychology work, but if you plan to go into general vet practice (which most vet students do), it is almost more to do with talking to people than anything else. You have to deal with so many personality types, many crazy. You have to make people understand you, you have to pursude them to treat the animal, you have to deal with them during difficult choices. I do not find this enjoyable at all and plan to go into research when i am done with vet school. But working for a vet will let you see what it is like.

Vet experieince is a requirement of vet school admission (paid or volunteer). The more species the better. There is a huge lack of large animal vets and working on horses/cattle will be a plus.

Did you take the necessary pre-veterinary courses for the veterinary schools you'd like to attend? These usually include biology, chemistry, physics, math, English, animal science, etc. If not, IMHO, you are better off going for the Master's in Animal Science and taking all the necessary pre-requisites. Also, be sure to get experience working with animals.
