What will become of Jamaica?

Now that I've heard that Jamaica has taken on the responsiblity of sheltering homeless Haitians, what will Jamaica be like?? Exactly how many people is Jamaica willing to take in out of the 1.5 million homeless? This could have serious effects on Jamaican society as many Hatians will most likely stay there. It will take a lot of time and money that Haiti doesn't have to cleanup/rebuild the affected parts of the country. By the time any reconstruction has taken place, Haitians will most likely have set up a somewhat comfortable living establishment. Please give me your thoughts as I don't know a lot about what's going on with regards to this subject, very concerned however.

Update:

I'm not talking about one or even several people traveling to another country for better opportunities. And Jamaicans fleeing Jamaica for Cuba is a whole nother discussion.

I am speaking of thousands of people at once being intergrated into a foreign society, kind of like when Cuba sent the dregs of their prisons to America with the anti Castro refugees. Now southern Florida (where the landed) is primarily Cuban. Will Jamaica now be the new Haiti? What bloodshed will come between the Jamaicans and Haitans over territory? This is what I'm asking.

Quite frankly, I think that we can't afford them. I mean it is really sad what happened to them and Jamaicans are helping but Jamaica, the country, I believe cannot take on this, what i suppose will be a challenge in caring for these people when so much is already happening here. Look at our taxes we have to be paying!!! And when these Haitians arrive, we will be using whatever little resources we have to support them. What I am saying might sound a little selfish, but the reality is JAMAICA can't afford to rescue them. We are already helping with the little we have, and Jamaica is not a first world country, we don't have the resources to do this, it will send our country into a deeper state of turmoil than it already is in.

Jamaicans have been advocating for Haitians. However, Jamaica is a developing country with too many of its own social problems to handle. Unemployment is sky high in Jamaica and the government is struggling to keep the country afloat. Jamaica is looking to Trinidad, another struggling country for a loan. Americans don't understand any of this but Jamaica is not in a position to take in masses of destitute people when it cannot handle and feed its own paupers. Jamaicans welcome foreigners who come with money to invest or businesses that will provide jobs and opportunities. They cannot handle competing with foreigners who are as hungry as they are since the pie is already stretched to the max. and people barely have a mouthful to saty alive. I don't see any way that they can integrate the Haitians into the society without instigating the fury of hungry Jamaicans. In my opinion, Jamaicans will be compassionate for a brief moment, but in a little, while when they see that Haitians are adding to the social problems, there will be fury.

First of all, Jamaican nah become nuh Haiti! Dat nah guh happen. Island of Jamaica, Haitians must adapt to dat, and to di people of Jamaica! So later on in generations, Haitians will be Jamaicans, not Jamaicans being Haitians!!!

    @ THE MJ FAN

Sweetie you better read up on your history! You can start where ever you like but may i suggest that you start with the Panama Canal and work your way forward. And YES there are a lot of Cubans in JA but you keep thinking that no Jamaicans ever made there way over to Cuba if you want to!

AND OMG ARE U SERIOUS??? Panama and Antigua is OVERFLOWING with Jamaicans and Trini has it's share ...

Like I said Read up on your history or better yet go visit those places and see for yourself sweetie!

Most Jamaicans are not fond of Hatian ppl. & if in Jamaica illegally, will report them to immigration. The accent will be a dead giveaway, so its not going to be easy for a Hatian to fit in or blend at all. Plus Jamaicans see how they mash up THEIR country & would not tolerate it. Anyway, there are few reliable boats to take for the trip. Some years ago a few boats landed in Portland and they were rounded up & deported back to Haiti.

Chances are they will flee to Cuba or the DR.

@ Cuban flo i don't know what you're talking about jamaicans going in droves to Cuba. last time i checked Cubans were going in droves to jamaica. think before you talk. Most jamaicans only think about America, England and Canada not Panama and Trinidad. Please show your proof of jamaicans coming to Trinidad and Panama in drove. i know so many Cubans in jamaica and many of my friends are of Cuban decent so please show proof.

EDIT: @ girl below me i am definitely not saying that there are no jamaicans in Cuba but in the 1980s when jamaica was suppose to become a communist nation jamaica was overflo with cubans and ask if ya don't know i know there are jamaicans in cuba but not like there was in jamaica. i know about the panama Canal but you act as if jamaicans are running to panama in drove trying to get away from jamaica. panama wanted jamaicans workers to help build their panama canal that's why they went there. i am not saying that there are no jamaicans there but last time i went there jamaicans are definitely not there in drove stop exaggerating yourself. i know that alot of jamaicans are in Antigua because i heard that. i have not been there before. besides aren't Cubans taking Miami? everywhere you go you see them. Miami, Costa Rica, puerto rico, mexico trying desperately to get to America. you always up in this section withyour negativity please take your lame comments to the Cuba section. your answers are not needed here.

What will become of Jamaica ? dont you mean what will become of Haitians ? they will need to adapt to singing and dancing reggae music ! learn the walk and talk the talk man !

  • jamaicans are afro-centrists, so they'll accept those machete-weilding maniacs. I don't care if they go to Jamaica, Cuba or Puerto Rico, just keep them out of El Cibao!
