can eye surgery result in better than 20/20 vision ?

I actually had Lasik done on both my eyes last June down in Houston. It was quick and painless, but a little creepy too (but not too bad). I went back for 3 follow up visits after the visit. The first one was the next day, to which I was able to drive myself and I tested at 20/20 in both my eyes. The next two visits (1 month and 3 months) I tested 20/20 in my right eye and 20/15 in my left. The nurses told me that with a lot of patients receiving 20/15 vision in one or both eyes is typical with the new technology they are using now. It has also correct some of my night vision problems I had before, like the halo effect on lights.

Well, this is an interesting question. I tell people that surgery "can" result in your vision being better than 20/20 without glasses or contacts but I wouldn't stake my reputation on it. Why not? Because the optics of an eye is variable between person to person. Some eyes are literally built to see better than 20/20 and some eyes are not, no matter what type of surgery or prescription you get. A majority (like 90% in my experience) will achieve 20/20 and better assuming there is no residual prescription left after the first lasik surgery (which is about 1 to 2 percent of the surgery patients for a particular surgeon).

So I tell people this, if you see better than 20/20 with glasses or contacts, I'd want to say you have a better chance of achieving that post lasik...but don't put your hopes on it. Just be happy you will be able to see most things clearly without the pain of glasses and contacts. You'll be able to wake up early and function. You'll be ready for emergency situations and you'll be living life without a handicap. In reality, it's really hard to look out there in the real world and tell the difference between 20/20 vision and 20/15 or better.
