Can sitting too close to the TV really hurt your eyes?

A friend and I were just discussing this one last night and I wondered if were really true.

I remember my mum saying it to me when I was a kid. But then again it was the seventies so the quality was very different.

Can it actually do a child damage to stand too close to the TV or was it just a saying our parents used because we were blocking their view.

ps.

When I mean stand in front of it I am talking about an arms length from it and for less than 10 minutes a day.

I can't speak for the screens that were first available. They may have emitted some kind of radiation. However the TVs that have been available for the last 30 years or so do not. Think about it. right now, you are sitting arms length from the same type of screen as is in some TVs.

I think the story about sitting too close to the TV hurting children's eyes comes from mixing up the cause and effect. When children's eyes are going bad, they sit closer to the TV so they can see it, later on, when it is discovered that they need glasses, the TV got blamed for it.

Yes it does damage the eyes. You can buy an alarm that stands on top of the TV and when you get too close it will go off.
