My cat is 19, stopped eating/drinking over past 3 days & screams each time I try to spoon feed her?
My cat is 19 years old and my dentist wanted to operate on her last year as her teeth were deteriorating. Due to renal problems, the vet could not put her under anaesthetic. She has been fine for past 10 months apart from the past 3 days. She has stopped eating and drinking and screams each time I try to spoon feed her. She also has terrible bad breath.

I have an 18 year old cat and I'm facing what you are facing. My cat can no longer eat canned or dry food. She also has bad teeth but she cannot have them cleaned because of her age. She has been in a diet of kitten replacement milk for a couple of weeks now and seems to like it.
I'm only doing "supportive" care at this time. I know she is close to her end and I'm just waiting and watching for those final signs that she is ready. Her coat has lost luster, she moves slowly due to arthritis, she is not as affectionate as she once was and purrs rarely. She has also lost a great deal of weight, weighing only 4 pounds at this time.
I will have her euthanized before she gets to the point of suffering. She's okay for now but I'm watching her closely and spending as much time as I can with her. It might be time for you to think about making the same choice. Yes, it's hard but think of your cat. Think about her quality of life. Euthanasia is painless, with no trauma or fear.
I'm sorry you're facing this but it's a time that comes in all pets' lives.

Well, i was in a similar situation about a moth ago. I have a 20 year old cat at home who i love dearly! He started to hide, and sleep all day long. You would never see him eat, or drink. Maybe, he would just lick the gravy off of his fancy feast. We took him to the vet, and as with you, everything was normal, except for some horrible teeth. He weighed only 4.2 pounds, and had lost .8 pounds since his last visit (which is alot on a 5 pound cat!) We took Merlin home, gave him some antibiotics from the vet, fed him special food and he came back around! He is still with us, and I am very grateful. But, that day, we were ready to say good bye. Honestly, do what your vet suggests. My vet said that it was good that my cat would still try to eat. But, if your cat is just laying there, waiting to die....do what your heart tells you. Just know that you have given your cat a life full of love and joy. Give him a big kiss, and tell him you love him! Good Luck. I would like to hear what happens... Best of luck, and lots of love!

Has anyone in any of the above situtations had a vet reccomend an appitute stimular? My cat will still eat baby food and Recovery from the vet, but her last test weren't all that great-starting kidney failure, blood in urine, etc. I feel at a moral dilima-Flannery is 19 and probably because of Pred. looks fat and healthy no matter how little he eats. The vet doesn't think he's in any pain, and I give him his Pred, a laxitive and vitimin, but an appitite stimular seems like going too far. What do you think?

Hon, I went through something like this and spent over a thousand dollars to save my cat. But once they stop eating and refusing water that's a sign that her organs are shutting down. You have been fortunate to have her live this long. This is a old cat, most cats live to be 13/14 yrs at the best.
Don't try and force feed her. Let nature take it's course or have her put to sleep.
Good Luck

Unfortunately it sounds like your cat is getting ready to pass on. Its a very sad thing and I know that you want her to live, but you must realize that by trying to keep her alive, you are making her suffer more. Her organs are shutting down because she is so old and they are not built to last that long. I had a 17 year old cat die when I was 8 and it can be very sad for one to go. It's her time though. Try to keep her as comfortable as possible and let her be alone. Its hard to imagine this but she probably needs time alone, to think (yes she can think) about her life, and whether or not she wants to fight. My prayers to you, I hope you choose the right thing to do. I strongly suggest that you DON'T euthanize her as it is a very inhumane death. God may want her to come home and you need to accept that. I apologize gravely, and hope I helped.

It sounds like it could be her time to go. Call your vet and get an appointment immediately, Cats cannot go without water for that long, they quickly develop fatty liver. She is definitely suffering, and her organs could be shutting down (hence the smell). You really need to get her to a vet, otherwise she will not last long and will suffer. Keep in mind she is very old and it may be necessary to euthanize her to prevent her from suffering further.

The bad breath is from the rotting teeth. Check with your vet to see if there's anything that ca be done considering the cat's age and her inability to be put under.

poor kitty. the vet at this point may have to remove the teeth that bother her. pray for her since she has renal problems this is a risk. have you tried soft can food and tuna. she needs iv fluids if she hasnt ate.

I think it is her time to leave her life :( call a vet and have them check her. don't force her to eat. if she does and then screams, it might rlly hurt.
im srry :| but hope this helps
