Is my knuckle broken or bruised?

I play softball and yesterday at practice we were using a pitching machine going about 65 mph, the ball came in and it hit my index finger on the knuckle in the center of it. Seconds after it happened it was swollen and black. I iced it immediately, but it broke the skin and it was bleeding and i cant bend it its to tight feeling and I have sharp pains. Today it is still very swollen and now different parts of my finger are turning black. When i push on it, it squishes in and i cant feel the knuckle. Is it bruised or broken?

More than likely its bruised. But the separation might be a cause for concern. While I'm not a Dr you may have some cartilage that may be torn. I would look for discoloration. Normally, the area will turn black or dark purple. If you are really bothered by it, go to a Sports Medicine Dr. They are more accustomed to tendons and cartilage injuries than most. Good Luck!

If it squishes in when you push on it, that means it is very swollen. Go to the doctor and get x-rays. It might be broken. Keep icing it until then to try to keep the swelling down.
