Have you ever seen the head blown out of a primer?
I pick up spent cases everywhere I go where people shoot. Here's one I picked up and didn't know what to make of it until I cleaned it. I have seen setback primers and some that blow completely out in semi-autos, but not like this. Note you can see the anvil very clearly.
By jove, I believe you are right. It is in backward!

is that primer in backwards?

Yep, it's in backward. My Dillon progressive reloading press has done that on .45 ACP about 0.5% of the time, which is too darn often. I have learned to watch for it before packaging for use. Of course, before I learned to watch for it, my first indication was a pop when I was shooting and a lot of fouling in my Kimber pistol after I waited 30 seconds with the muzzle still pointed downrange. When I carefully opened the breech and examined the round, I saw the backward primer that had still gone off, but blown the wrong direction!

At first glance it looks like a primer that was put in upside down. I've personally done it too many times when reloading. But, since it's an empty brass casing, it leaves me scratching my head. Perhaps more will be revealed if you decap the primer to see what the other side looks like.

That's just a primer that's been put in backwards...you can knock that sucker out with the decapping pin on your resizing die but it's one of those things that you need to do very carefully. Wear some safety glasses.

I've never had one of mine do so (knock wood!), but I've seen a few. Yours looks a good deal neater than those I've seen, which have just been set back and a hole punched through the center.
