What breeds look similar to "designer" mutts?

I work at a kennels and cattery (hard work but very enjoyable) and at the moment we have three purebred dogs in that all look very similar to "labradoodles".

The dogs are a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, a Kerry Blue Terrier and an Irish Water Spaniel, and all look like an example of a "labradoodle" in the huge variety they come in.

Ironically, all of these dogs have similar traits to those "guaranteed" by "labradoodle" breeders, including the famed hypoallergenic trait - however most info on these breeds correctly suggests that rather than hypoallergenic they are less likely to trigger allergies.

So, any comments on my observations from the fellow sane people (who know the "designer" truth) and especially any from the doodle fans? Also anyone who knows these breeds, I'd love to know more about them.

I was just so surprised to see these dogs that look so similar yet aren't, and still wonder why people insist on breeding and buying "labradoodles".

Also, if anyone knows of any other breeds that resemble other "designer" mutts - please share. I intend to mention these breeds if I ever speak to someone who wants a "labradoodle", just to note that these look and are similar to the mutts yet have guaranteed traits and you can get them from health tested parents.

Update:

Thanks for everyone's answers! As always, another reason to wonder why someone would want a doodle.

As for the Kerry Blue - it is the first time I've ever met one, and yes the only real similarity is the coat. However, in the "designer" mutt range I have seen the odd one look similar to this.

As for the un-cut Poodle - that's interesting! I've never actually seen a Poodle without the face trimming. Thanks for that!

Basically, the point of this question was to find out how many breeds "designer" mutts can resemble because of the huge range they end up in due to being mixed breeds.

All the poodle-mutts pretty much look the same. I dont understand why people dont just get a poodle?

Poodles do make good service dogs, I raised one over 10 years ago that went on to be a dog guide for a blind lady. At least with a poodle you have a guarantee of coat type!

Labradoodles look just like Standard Poodles who's faces have been left unclipped.

It's just rare to see a standard with it's face left long so everyone thinks the Labradoodles look is "special"

In general a lot of mutts look the same no matter what they are mixed with.

All Pitt mixes have the same look, all poodle mixes have the same look, all shih tzu mixes have the same look, they are different YES, but they all look roughly the same. A mutt is a mutt.

Fííσnnαвhαír ~•~ Ever seen a Kerry Blue that has NOT been groomed for a show? I can see how some people could mistake one for a Labradoodle if it's coat has been left to go shaggy.

She was more right than you think. The Toy FoxTerrier was created by breeding the Smooth Fox Terrier with Chihuahuas, Miniature Pinscher and Italian Greyhounds. Of course after putting all these breeds in the mix, the initial breeders kept at it long enough to 'fix type' and thereby created a new breed, something the hybrid people are NOT doing. But still, look at any purebred and if you look back far enough you'll find mutts. Because breeds originate from mixing other breeds or extreme selective breeding within a parent breed you will ALWAYS have situations where to the untrained eye breed X will be mistaken for breed Y. And sometimes this applies to the trained eye as well. Who by sight alone can tell the difference between a Toy Manchester Terrier and a Miniature Pinscher? Even expert dog judges struggle with this! (especially with examples that don't conform well to breed standards)

LOL.... all the big doodle mixes look the same to me, as do the little doodle mixes. Although a friend of mine got a Labradoodle that looked to me like an Irish wolf hound. She got it from the pound , it was an elderly man's dog and he passed away. His family told the pound people that his dad was pure breed Black Lab and his mom was a gray standard poodle. Curious outcome though, never saw another labradoodle that looked like him. As for me I love my Mutts. One is a pit something mix ( thrown out of a car when he was a puppy) The other is a heinz 57, fluffy 5lb mutt from the pound. Love them both to pieces. Also I commend you on your work. Keep up the good job.

Anyone who has a real wheaten or a Kerry Blue and thinks it was labradoodle is a moron. When you have one of the Irish terriers, unless you're blind, there's very little doubt that that's what they are! :-) But yeah, I can see how people could cow buyers.

My puggle puppy (shelter adopted, thank you) looks like she could be a runt mastiff puppy.

I know labradoodles are kind of everywhere now, but I know the original intention behind it was to get a hypoallergenic guide dog. But I know I've seen people using standard purebred poodles as guide dogs, soo....?

Curly coated retrievers also look a lot like labradoodles...

I think most of the little poo's and doodles basically just look like Poodles..

But I think a lot of them are comparable to Bichon Frises and Coton de Tulears.
