Trainability doesn't necessarily equate to intelligence. In fact, in many cases, the more intelligent the animal is, the harder it is to train, because it likes to test you to see what it can get away with. Cats can be taught tricks, but they require food/treat rewards. I guess that makes them smarter.

Neither animal can answer the questions so we don't know their IQ, a cat may be in some way smarter, but more independent and so not trainable.

I've worked with Golden Retrievers, they can do things most two or three year olds can do, and they can sometimes do it independent of human order. That's real intelligence. I've never seen a cat behave in an un-feline way. So I'm going with the dogs as more intelligent.

Comparing two different species isn't accurate. Dogs are pack animals so learn things from humans very quickly. Cats are solitary, there's no incentive for them to please a pack member--it doesn't mean they're less intelligent.

Both have been studied enough so that their 'upper range' comes to abuota 10 year old human. Though most fall into the 5 or 6 year old human range.
