Why am I taking prednisone?
I have been on clomid since January. I started with 50mg, now my doctor has me on 150mg. My progesterone levels have been low every month, so for April, my doctor is keeping me on the 150mg of clomid and gave me a prescription for prednisone. Does anyone know why? What is this drug supposed to do? Thanks!

Prednisone is an anti inflamatory steriod that keeps your body from attacking an implanting egg (it's also used for certain auto immune disorders like Crohn's disease. All women have white blood cells in the uterus and when the embryo attaches, it signals the woman's body (scientist don't clearly understand how or why) making the woman white blood cells see the embryo as a foreign invader.
Woman with higher numbers of white blood cells (the same cells that fight off bacteria and virus) don't have that same response from the embryo. By taking prednisone, it keeps your body white blood cell count low, protecting the embryo. There are side effects. While it protects any early pregnancy, it also lowers your resistance to other infections due to lowering your white blood cell count. It also is very hard on your bones so it's not good to take for long periods of time. Usually blood test can detect if your body is prone to attacking embryos.
If you're low on progesterone, you should ask for progesterone supplements and begin taking them 3-5 days after ovulation and continue taking them for 10-12 weeks of pregnancy. Prednisone doesn't help the issue of low progesterone, it just aids in implanting and preventing loss due to high white blood cells in the uterus.
