Recommendation for a good replacement window?

I want to remove the single hung window frames in my 1922 house near Seattle and replace them with a double pane double hung window unit. I plan to remove the window weights and pack the cavity with insulation. So I am looking for a retrofit window that I can put in place, trim out and use.

I'm a trim carpenter and cabinet maker.

I would recommend Marvin windows for this. They give you a double hung window in your existing frame with all the insulating value of new windows. http://www.marvin.com/default.aspx?page=Ultimate_I...

They are available in full wood or aluminum clad. A note about aluminum cladding. When looking for clad windows make sure you find a window that had extruded aluminum and NOT roll form aluminum. Extruded aluminum comes out of the machine the shape that is needed. It is thick, durable and very ridged. The corners screw together making sure the joint is tight. Roll form comes out of the machine flat and is then bent into the shape needed. It is very thin and very often companies that use it will just butt the joints together and don't worry about sealing them up. This leaves an area that water can get into the frame and rot the wood. Marvin windows are available in a large variety of standard colors and a huge variety of custom colors, several different woods and lots of options. Hope this helps

at first my suggestion is for the low funds. in case you decide on genuine timber and might handle to pay for it, knock your self out. For white vinyl, there are a gazillion manufacturers. Andersen sells "Silver Line by using Anderson", which in basic terms skill Andersen offered the Silver Line business employer so they might have a greater much low-cost line of homestead windows to sell. An authoritative source says they are no longer extremely sturdy. satirically I heard this weeks after installation one in my front room -- yet I have been given this 5' x 8' double slider for $one hundred thirty off craigslist, variety new. have self assurance it or no longer, this is lots greater beneficial than the vinyl window it replaced -- that became genuine trash. seek for climate seals that have overlapping, interlocking flanges (annoying to describe) so as that when closed, the air could could make countless turns to get into your place -- no longer in user-friendly terms 2 products of stuff pressed at the same time, which the wind could push aside. try flexing the window. The wind will attempt to flex it, too :-) See how sturdy the fabric conserving the fringe of the glass in the physique is -- a sturdy one won't budge while pressed with a screwdriver; low-fee ones may well be pulled out. Traco makes an extremely astounding window. while i offered from them countless years in the past, they positioned tempered glass in *each and every* window, which they are in a position to do simply by fact the have their very own tempering facility, unlike in basic terms approximately all different manufacturers. the salesman positioned the pattern window on the floor, stood on the glass, and flung a golfing ball down on it. spectacular.

I went to Lowe's and bought the "Thermostars" by Pella. I chose those over HD and the Andersen's because they were ALL vinyl, and no wood to paint. Which was GREAT until we had nothing to nail the molding to on the inside of the house. Don't know exactly who or what to recommend, but I will tell you that my brothers boss is a genius, knows EVERYTHING about construction, and went with Andersen's in his house. He wouldn't buy them from Home Depot though, went through the local building supply co. He's says there's DEFINITELY a difference. Hope this helps.
