What is with the sizing on "slimming" clothes?

We've all seen those pants or dresses with a slimming panel or underclothes with slim control panels yet they sell them in size small and medium! Is this not promoting that self image of never being slim enough? I mean come on if your a size small or medium you don't need clothes to hold your belly in and make you slimmer make them size large xl and 2 or 3xl.

No wonder so many girls and young woman either suffer from anorexia/bulimia or just have real lousy self esteem.

Whats your opinion?

Update:

I so agree that obesity is an expic dilema but the causes are not that difficult to figure out either, The price of "healthy food" is out of control fresh fruit and veggies in Canada are so pricy especially if you are not in a big city, 2lts pop=$.99 2lts of juice $4.00 bag of chips $1.99 granola bars $4.00 people on lower incomes simply can't afford to eat healthy lean meats, low fat products aetc almost always cost more.

Our society is entranced and obsessed with looks. It's a terrible time to grow up as a teenager who is even slightly overweight when you see these commercials (and of course real life) with girls who's pants barely cover their waistline - and they're wearing short skirts and high heels.

I agree with the fact that society is crushing the self esteem of today`s youth: pertaining to weight issues. The standards they set are almost unrealistic, and would make a person unhealthy if he/she actually reached that type of body weight. But also look at the other side of the situation;the world is OBESE. Slimming panels on certain clothes are trying to offer overweight people a chance to appear a few pounds slimmer. And sizes like medium, and small, may not always pertain to weight but to height. A fat person can be tall or short. If you take a look at recent statistics, America is the most obese country in the world. Now companies are using that to their advantage to try to earn money off of Americans` lack of self confidence. Personally, I know more overweight people than underweight.
