My cat uses the litter box. But also urinates and defecates on furniture. WHY?!?

Basically what the title says. He's about 14 weeks old. He uses the litter box, but he also uses the furniture. I don't understand. The litter is cleaned twice a day and changed out completely at least once a week. Why is he only using it some of the time? :(

I work at a cat clinic and the first thing we always tell people is that we need to eliminate any possible health issues first! There maybe a reason he isn't using the litter box. But since he is so young it may just be a behavioral issue. If he isn't neutered this may help.

We always say its best to rule out any possible health issues first because you might find something that needs treating. If not, then its behavioral which we can then deal with, but you don't want it to be the other way around and you don't treat your cat for a health issue until you find it too late.

This is totally normal, he is spraying. It is some thing almost all un-neutered male cats will do. They are simply marking out territory. You might be able to get him to stop by removing where he is spraying. But neutering him should also fix the problem.

    Hope this helps.

oh and I am pretty sure that MALE cats don't go into heat, they are ready for that any time there is a FEMALE in heat around. Just saying for refrence.

    it's not normal at all.

A vet visit is in order. It's possible that he is going into heat, but they usually just spray, not poop. It's very unusual. They're very clean animals. I'm sure he's fine, but I'd definitely go find out what's up.

Your cat may be lonely due to missing his/her mother and is looking to get attention.

  • it's marking it's territory area to show the other cats (if there is) to stay away

If you haven't had him neutered yet, he may be marking his territory. Or, something may be stressing him out.
