Could be muscular or disc. The crack was your vertabrae moving but the pain is stemming from either your discs pressing on nerves or a stretched or torn muscle. You need to see your doctor and get ice on the affected and take some anti inflammatories. Apply the ice pack every 2 hours or so for 10mins at a time. You can then apply a heat pad for the same length of time afterward. Ice for disc inflammation and heat for muscular relief. Bed rest is not the answer with lower back injuries. You need to move about and start to do some core exercises when the pain subsides. Your core muscles for some unknown reason shutdown when your lower back is injured and you need to condition them again. From what you are describing I would hazard a guess that you have a disc bulge at the lower vertabrae which is pressing the nerves, therefore affecting your ability to walk properly. Pain when coughing is also a symptom of disc injury. Hopefully by now you have consulted a professional for advice. Good luck.
