Christian Democrats? Anyone care to explain?

In the past 20 months or so, I've met alot of people who openly claim to be Christians who attend church, pray, etc. but yet they are Democrats. I was just curious as to how one could be both a Christian and a Democrat since Democrats go against most things the Bible says (abortion, personal responsibility, gay marriage, etc.)

On personal responsibility: "For every man shall bear his own burden" - Galatians 6:5

"Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: "Those unwilling to work will not get to eat." - 1 Thessalonians 3:10

"The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty." - Proverbs 21:5

On Abortion: The Bible never refers to a child in the womb as a fetus (and definitely not a "lump of cells"). He always calls it a "baby" or "babe", "child", "infant", etc. He used the term "with child" 26 times, but never "with fetus"

Jesus, dying on the cross for us, is pretty much the definition of pro-life. He gave up his life so we could live!

"You shall not murder" - Exodus 20:13

"These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood"

"Cursed is the man who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person." Then all the people shall say, "Amen!" - Deuteronomy 27:25

"Be fruitful and multiply" - Genesis 1:28

"As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected." - Numbers 14:13

On Gay Marriage:

"'Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable." - Leviticus 18:22

"For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet." - Romans 1:26-27

"Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire" - Jude 1:7

So, again, I'm just wondering how one can call themselves a Christian, but knowingly go against him and His Word? Only real, honest answers here. No name-calling, bashing, rude comments.

.

Update:

Nerdlinger, there is a big difference between a young child who can't care for/fend for itself, and an adult who just wants to sit around and feed off the government/tax payers.

I funy it funny how some of you are like "I'm a Christian and a Democrat, and it's not big deal". You just sweep the Bible under the rug and live your own lives with your own set of rules.

Democrats seen to be against personal responsibility - with welfare, medicaid, etc.

Those just enable people to be lazy and have someone work for them. I understand that every once in awhile people need a helping hand, but people usually live off those things, never bothering to do anything about their situation.

Sure, we all sin. They're mistakes. But knowingly sinning and being okay with it is a different story.

Update 2:

The Bible does say there "is a time for war" and in fact, God ordered war!

Christians and churches do care about children (including orphans). Try to find a church bulletin and see how many are donating toys, food, clothing, helping to rebuild facilities, traveling outside the U.S. to places like Haiti to help and get their hands dirty. The Bible commands us to look after and love orphans.

So It's okay for a Christian to be a Republican? A Christian should be pro-war, not care about those in poverty, and protest abortion and gay anything? The answer is no. As a Christian we should be outside either the democrat or republican lines because we are part of the kingdom of God first and foremost, not the kingdom of America. Both parties have problems. Does this mean we shouldn't vote? I don't think so. I simply say that we should see both sides for their strengths and shortcomings. We should love everyone as Christ loved, which means stop protesting and start loving! All this nonsense of Obama as the anti-christ is ridiculous. Bush was the anti-christ to democrats. We need to follow God's rule of love, not a political party.

I think that the views of Jesus aligned far more with the views of the Democrats.

He spent his time feeding the poor, he was a healer (so he would not have voted against health care access for all), and he said things like "Judge not lest ye be judged". He also stated that it would be easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Therefore, he probably would not have been a fan of cutting taxes for the wealthy, and it is highly doubtful that he would ever have voted against social supports for the poor. In general, I think that when people say they vote Republican because they are Christian it is most often because of the abortion issue, which Christ himself never spoke of. If "Thou shalt not murder" is being used as an argument, then the Democrats have an equal claim on that one (in apposing the death penalty). Besides, he was a victim of the death penalty and persecuted for his religion; another example of why the separation of church and state is of paramount importance. Christ stated that it would be difficult for a rich man to get into heaven, thus it is unlikely he would have been against redistribution of wealth. Christ taught compassion, in everything he said. It is not uncommon for Republicans to try to claim that God is on their side, but I do not understand how a Christian can read the quotes of Jesus, and then vote Republican.

I am a Christian, and I am democratic. I disagree with MANY things though, such as abortion and gay marriage. But I feel other things that democrats believe are more important then worrying about if two men can get married. I would rather our men and woman be out of Iraq then gay marrage be forbidden and still be there. There are just more imprtant things.

    God bless

Well, you're obviously calling for a sh*tstorm if you go and generalize and stereotype both Democrats and Republicans.

It shows a great amount of ignorance on your part to think that ALL Democrats and ALL Christians think alike.

    You need to think more.

Democrats are against personal responsibility? What nonsense is this?

If you want to follow that verse to its logical conclusion, you should be against charity as well. All those starving children should quit complaining and just die in silence.
