It's too soon. If he's still not talking in a year, then think about testing him.

"on the record" a speech threapist is NOT allowed to say if a child has a specific..."label" The speech therapist may suspect the chlild has autism but...shouldn't say either way. they are not qulaified. She could get into alot of trouble..not saying you should get her in trouble though. But..she has broken the rules and may have caused worry when there may...or may not be. She should have suggested you get the child evaluated for other issues...which you should.

Not speaking at 2...should be a concern. Don't be blinded thinking...he will talk soon. He may talk soon but just to be on the safe side and get him the help he needs...if he does, see a neurologist! A doctor is the only person who can label a child and has the knowledge to do so. Autism or not..he needs to be seen by someone. Have they gotten his hearing checked, if not that is the first thing they need to do to rule out hearing issues....which may be why he isn't talking...he can't hear correctly.

When it comes to my children I don't doubt anything...I get them checked for any issue I think they may have. I had an autism concern with my son at 2ish...so I got him checked out. He did have speech therapy at that age. I talked to the therapsist and begged her for her "off the record" opinion. she said NO WAY....I was a little relieved but still had concerns so, I took him to a neurologist to be sure, and have piece of mind. I know early intervention is key in any issue a child may have. If they have it...you can deal with it...if they dont...you can be sure you have done everything in your power to do what is right for the child.

Speech therapists typically do not have the education to be able to diagnose autism. My 2.75yo son with autistic tendencies (and a family history of autistic spectrum disorders) also has a speech therapist (through early childhood intervention), and when asked she would only say "I can't diagnose". When pressed, she seemed to want to give her opinion, but she ended up going back to "I can't diagnose". So, unless your friend's grandson's speech therapist has other qualifications than just being a speech therapist, she can't diagnose (someone else answered basically the same thing).

Not speaking by the age of 2 is not much of a basis for suspecting autism. There are many possible reasons why a child might not speak at 2yo, and most of those reasons have nothing to do with autism. In order to suspect autism, the child would need to have red flags other than language development. firstsigns.org has a list of red flags. You could also go through the Modified CHecklist for Autism in Toddlers:

Technically, you're not supposed to administer that (a professional should do that), but considering you've already been given an opinion by someone who isn't supposed to, what is the harm in doing it?

If it appears that your friend's grandchild is likely to be autistic, she'd have to find a professional to do a thorough developmental evaluation - someone who actually *is* qualified to do so (a pediatric neurologist or something).

Source(s): I probably have Asperger's (when I was growing up that label didn't exist yet though, so that's why I haven't been diagnosed). My younger brother has PDD-NOS and lives in a group home for autistic people. My 2.75yo son has many autistic tendencies. ASDs have been a special interest of mine for probably 4 years now.

Have him assessed by another professional. In California, we have regional centers that do assessments through age 3 for free. Ask the speech therapist for a referral to an occupational and behavioral therapist to get a full assessment done. The sooner the better, as kids with mild autism can lead mostly normal lives with the right therapy, and a key is getting therapy while they are young.

My son is a intense smart autistic and that i'm able to inform you, the repeating (they call it "echolalia") at 3 and a nil.5 is a definite sign that he's autistic. Autism has maximum of tiers that he can do o.k. and study notwithstanding if he does have autism. Autism does not necesarilly impression discovering issues that are black and white (case in point, my son gets ideas-blowing grades in math: 2+2 will continually equivalent 4) and alot of autistic toddlers have IMPECCABLE reminiscence, so discovering songs isn't something (my son could examine a e book at 8, and once you asked him what the e book replaced into approximately, he could repeat the finished e book, be conscious for be conscious). the subject notwithstanding, comes with analyzing comprehension, and reading issues that require opinion or judgement, etc. it rather is with bigger smart autistic toddlers. My son had an apprehension of the dark, and he's not gentle to gentle, so i don't understand approximately that. As I mentioned, there are distinctive tiers of autism. Your ultimate line of protection with autism is to capture it early. tell her, "How could she experience if he's autistic, and he or she did not supply him a gamble as early as achievable to be a very smart newborn?" around that age is after we've been given my son examined, simply by echolalia. They immediately positioned him in a Headstart application, and by potential of the time he began kindergarten, he replaced into repeating much less, and forming his own words. He went to college in a known type, yet with a paraprofessional with him, so if he does not understand something, he did not decelerate the finished type. he would be graduating intense college next 12 months, and he would be going to artwork college. If she loves her newborn, she will have the ability to grant him each and every threat to be as favourite as he can. And he desires to start as early as achievable, so he can a minimum of capture up. it is truthfully loose for testing, she does not even might desire to pay. sturdy luck. i desire she listens to reason and does each and every thing she would be able to to help her newborn.

you know i would have him see by a specailist. it is not and easy diagnosis. however it is something that can be worked one. boys do tend to speak later. but 2 is a precarious age. he may just be in his own world. i would definitely have him seen to by 2 mdo just to check.
