Police departments going back to 45 ACP?

I was reading in Handguns Magazine that police departments are dropping the .40 and going to the .45 because the recoil is manageable and the stopping power is better. Any thoughts?

Shot, I sure hope they don't. I was at my local range three weeks ago and the locals were doing requals, let me say some of those boys are an embarrassment. I was standing there with my mouth open after one of them shot the range table in front of him. I'd say 70% of them were flinching and most of them were using 92's. I don't think most of them could handle a 40 let alone a 45 round.

What I have seen is a whole lot more 45 caliber pistols on the range being used by civilians who are wanting an all around weapon or a home defense weapon. In the past six years I'd bet the 45 has seen a big resurgence in the public.

The issue with the 45 is that the rounds are bigger. That means that you either have to go single stack or have a really thick grip. Having a those extra rounds is a real advantage, especially for police officers. This is a problem for people who don't have large hands.

Personally, I think they are going to find out the truth, that it doesn't matter a whole lot which handgun round you use. It is still a handgun round. They should work more on shooting than wasting money changing calibers.

i'm keen on 10mm..in spite of the undeniable fact that that's in basic terms way too costly and hard to locate regionally in case you do not reload. Doubletap is between the few places with warm 10mm ammo left and it is not decrease priced . The Glock 20 is a solid gun designed to shoot 10mm however the grip is somewhat super. in case you acquire a Glock 20 it may be sensible to p.c.. up a conversion barrel in .40s&w so which you would be able to practice for decrease priced. The .40 5 acp is a robust around.. yet frankly that's even too costly to coach all of the time now through intense metallic costs. i think it extremely relies upon on what you prefer . in case you prefer a noisy efficient gun you are able to as nicely hunt with decide for a 10mm. in case you prefer a gun thats in basic terms for self protection get a .40 5

My godfather works for the Beverly Hills PD and they all switched to the Sig226 .40 cal as their standard issue sidearm... I haven't heard that they're switching otherwise. 9mm was the choice in the past, but they switched to.40 cal because it has substantially more power while retaining the high capacity to be the best choice for a modern police force IMO. They "offer a good combination of expansion, penetration, temporary cavitation, and sufficient energy transfer to impart hydrostatic shock." .45's are a proven platform, but you just can't have as many rounds in the clip.

The 45 is the yardstick by which quite a few other handgun calibers are measured; as long as there are human beings around we will always be trying something new and improved; different; better?; yada. It is just part of our genetic makeup or something.

This is news to me. I heard many were moving to Sig and 9mm. I heard the SS was going to Sig and 357s.

I would think that any that were moving away from 40 would do so because of recoil, not power.

personal opinion. 45acp is harder for repeatability... in real life situations, the first shot is to gauge the target, the second two are to take it down... this is much easier with a smaller round... especially with LE heavy triggers... i think civilians with guns have them in general because they like to shoot, and many of them carry... Police carry beacuse they have to - not all of them are 100% comfrotable with their firearm. with this in mind, having a smaller round would be better. i thikn they should all carry 9's - but for me, i perfer the 45.

it should be up to the officer.
