I bought a truck, got bill of sale, but title wasn't signed. What do I do?

The former owner passed away. It's a 1996 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup, and the bill of sale was several days before he died. How do I get title if family doesn't want to sign. Former owner was paid for truck.

Update:

Truck was titled in Arkansas-never transferred. I live in Georgia, and bought the truck here. Former owner lived In Georgia at time of death.

Most states will allow you to file for issuance of a new title. Arkansas uses the form here:http://www.dfa.arkansas.gov/offices/motorVehicle/D... There is probably a similar procedure in Georgia. Google "Motor Vehicle Title Issuance" and it will probably come up. Georgia will probably want to verify with Arkansas, but it should just be an annoying formality. Check with the Georgia Motor vehicle department to see if you need to file in Georgia or Arkansas.

If the estate/heirs of the seller try to block the issuance of a new title, the bill of sale, the fact that you have possession of the vehicle, and any canceled checks or other proof that money changed hands will prove the transaction. Pull all of that together and submit it with the request for issuance of a new title.

The only out you have is to forge the signature, otherwise the sale is incomplete, and the truck goes to the estate of the dead man and you are OUT THE MONEY

If the title wasn't signed over, you didn't buy *anything*. You can't prove you own it.
