Considering being foster parents?

My wife and I have had problems having children and we really can't afford the costs of adoptions. For some reason its more expensive than actually having a child.

Anyhow my wife and I have started discussing becoming foster parents. I'm the more hesitant one about it. I've just heard horror stories about it. and then there's when the kids you grow to adore go back to their biological parents. Do the Pros outweigh the cons?

If you are thinking about becoming foster parents because you want to have a child around, but can't have your own or afford adoption, you are setting yourself up for heartbreak and I don't recommend it. If you are wanting to become a foster parent to help children who's families are in crisis get through their difficult times, then you are on the right track.

It is possible for foster children to become available for adoption, but much of the time these kids are in and out of foster care for years before the parents rights are terminated. They are in and out of different foster homes and in many cases are a mess emotionally. As a foster parent you have no control over how long the children stay with you or how many children you might get. Many of them are only with you for a few weeks and some may be with you for years before they are given to their parents.

By all means though, speak to some one with your states foster care licensing department for their opinions.
