When (and why) did we start putting "the end" in movies?

People weren't too bright when movies first came out.

    They were silent films.

They weren't called movies but moving pictures

There might be news, cartoons or ads following a movie or even another movie

A better question is why do books say the end. There are no more pages. Who needs to be told there are no more pages?

i believe it also stems from the beginning of the movie industry when the movie houses use to show 2 or 3 different movies one right after the other. they started adding "The End" so people knew to get up and leave. also, was easy for them to know who to kick out that hadn't paid for the next showing of different movie.

Previews/cartoons were also shown in between movies. this is where the term "trailer" came from. Today, they show previews at beginning of movies.
