"Dog owners are all scruffy"?

I went to a wedding this morning so for once was all dressed up. My dog needed to go out just before we left so I as walking a big stinky dog with a tennis ball in his mouth, mud on his paws and dirt in his fur (and he only had a bath yesterday!!)... but wearing high heels, make up, styled hair and smart clothes.

Maybe it's because the other people in park have seen me before and are used to me wearing whatever I happen to grab first in the morning (inevitably something mismatched) but I didn't half get some strange looks lol.

Do you think that there's some sort of stereotypical judging going on here. Not nasty judging... they were more curious and hostile... but they obviously think that dog owners are all scruffy and don't care very much about their looks.

What are your experience of this? Do you care how you look when you walk your dog?

I could care less about how I look... But I can not speak for all dog people. I don't think it's necessarily dog people, so much as people who have actual things to worry about, instead of wanting to look pretty all the time. Some people just don't have time to spend three hours every day on their outfit, hair, etc.

I couldn't care less how I look ever. I'm not doing anything for anybody else. If I'm happy with how I feel, they can think what they want. They look at me like I'm drabby and stupid. I think that they are the stupid ones for caring more about how they look than how they act and think.

I don't think many people would like to be classed as scruffy. I like to look nice and so do wear makeup and wear nice clothes..most of the time!!! When i'm walking the hounds i could care less what i was wearing. Normally, it's the first thing i grab from the wardrobe. Unless it happens to be during the day and i have been out somewhere before hand then i don't go out my way to look nice when i'm walking the dogs. I wear whats suitable- i.e if it's raining then the wellies go on!

A normal outfit for me when walking the dogs is joggers/cottons, the first t-shirt that i pick up, baggy jumper and whatever footwear suitable- living in Scotland that's usually wellies!! Hair pushed back and, if in the morning, no makeup. Although if it's during the day and i've been somewhere prior to that then i will have makeup on, but it will be the stuff i had on before not newly applied!

I don't care, nor do my dogs, the people i pass are "doggy people" and don't often wear dresses, skirts etc to walk their dogs either. I'm not a dress/skirt person really, i mean i have one day dress that i will wear if it's hot enough, but i much prefer jeans, shorts and i find jeggings incredibly confortable- jeggings are things i can also wear on walks so they're practical too ;) aha.

I really don't think a skirt or a dress would be the best thing to wear here, do you?

    I probably fit the stereotype.

I usually wear sweatpants or my baggy old jeans with a t shirt or a hoodie.

Usually hair up in a pony tail, bangs pinned back.

I almost always wear some kind of concealer or something though. My skin is awful. But, hey, sometimes I just don't care.

If I'm just going around the block, I go as I am, just slip on some slippers or tennis shoes (I never wear them in public besides walking my dog..)

But generally, I don't dress that bad..to school and when I go out, I think I dress decently and I wear make up and stuff.

But when I'm not with friends..yeah, I guess you could say I look pretty scruffy hahah

  • I've never really thought about it, I just wear whatever I'm wearing to walk the dogs. I'm not a morning person and subsequently neither are my dogs. I walk them in the evening or at night and I usually don't see anyone on my walk because it's on a trail that goes back into the woods. My only prerequisite is shoes and socks... the trail is sandy so wearing sandals is a no-no. Sometimes if I'm wearing a summer dress and sandals I'll walk them down by the graveyard so I can walk on the pavement while they go in the woods/ditch on the side. I wear whatever I normally do, which depends largely on the weather and the season. In the winter I wear this dorky camouflage hat with the ear flaps because it's too cold without it! and big boots, a scarf, gloves and long johns. I try not to go far when it's minus 20 though!

Like you, I normally grab the first cleanest mismatched outfit to do the deed. And a lot of others are doing the same. I have had the experience of being dressed when walking the dog, but the look that gets me the most stares are the times I have to rush somewhere after having just cleaned numerous dog kennels, walking dogs, bathing dogs, and treating sick dogs in my treatment "wing." I love to run in a Wal-Mart or grocery store on these occasions because I can usually get through very quickly. Lines clear for me. And I am usually purchasing Pedialyte, Yogurt and Baby Food ... so get a lot of very strange stares. I know they are wondering what exactly I am doing with a baby at my age and, more, what I have been doing. There are times I look as though I have not bathed in awhile. I imagine I look a lot like Hooch did this morning when you walked him. :D

    And the looks are priceless.

For me it's the practicality side of it. Personally I wouldn't feel very comfortable trotting through the fields in high heels and a dress: with dogs. Without the dogs sure, but I'd rather not have muddy paw prints all over my clothes, nor is it very comfortable to work my dog in a skirt, bending down, running around, climbing fences etc etc may expose me a little too much!

Yes I would probably snarl a person who was wearing heels. In fact I do (no offence) I see somone with ballet pumps on and/or a dress and think 'god they really aren't dressed for dog walking'. I don't give a flying monkeys about what I'm wearing to walk the hounds, as long as it's comfy and I don't care if it gets dirty, then that's fine! However I will admit dog walking is the ONLY time I dress down.

Actually, I must admit; if it's just Herbie I'm walking I don't dress so scruffy.

In fact, on Friday I met up with a friend in the park, it wasn't until I was in the park that my friend rang me and said come

see me, so I was already dressed in doggy clothes. Anyhow, I had grey jogging bottoms on, a white baggy top, red hoody tied around my waste, converse and my hair right up: when I sat down next to her the first thing she said was 'i didn't think that was you coming over because I was thinking to myself, Catherine would never dress like that' haha!!

Says it al really; there must be a steriotypical dress code for dog walkers!!

Yes - I care how I look when I walk my dog. I WANT to look scruffy!

I would rather not wear my best finery when walking through muddy puddles etc, so yes - when walking my dog I'm often out in my old trainers with a tear in the side, the jeans with frayed threads at the bottom etc.

It's about dresing for the occasion. I'd be surprised if I called out the plumber and he turned up in a tux.

I wear my scruffy clothes for doing scruffy jobs. I wear smarter clothes for job interviews, weddings etc. I suspect it's the same for most people.

i think it has more to do with them making judgments about the breed or mix of just not knowing what the dog is or being unsure if the dog is friendly and UTD on shots.

as for me i usually put on some torn bleached jeans, and whatever t shirt is lying around then put on a jacket or shawl i do get odd looks and occasionally people tell me "it's not winter how can you stand it" honestly i ALWAYS go out in something that covers my arms even now when its 100 degrees outside. i know they arent avoiding my dog it's all me!. im cleaned up and usually wearing some kind of hat.

some people do get the courage to come over and ask to pet Oliver and politely ask why i'm wearing a long sleeve shirt in this heat.

here was one stereotype i LOVED lol "you have an akita! you must like japanese stuff right?"

    ADD:

once a friend lent me his viking hat! guess how many ideas they had?

I usually walk my dogs in whatever I've been wearing, or will throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. I dont think that I'm ever /that/ scruffy. I dont generally wear mismatched things, but I honestly dont put much effort into looking good. I'll just put my hair up and out the door we go!

Maybe all dog owners do have their scruffy moments especially first thing in the morning and last thing at night. I know I do. Here is the funny part, when my APBT and I go out to an event or yard sales on Saturday we have matching pedicures. Addie, also has a pink backpack with matching pink hat. I on the other hand am in jeans and a clean t-shirt. I am thinking of getting a hat to match hers. Yes, I am a crazy dog lady, but it just makes life more fun. And besides people tell me there is no way my dog can be a pit bull she is just too cute and sweet.
