R&P: Let's talk about musical bigots?

Can anyone please tell me why there are people who think that you should only listen to a type of music based on the color of your skin? "Oh no no no! You're not a white person you can't listen to any rock music!! Why don't you go find yourself some Motown records to check out!"

The last time I checked, music was a universal thing; open to everyone regardless of age, sex and race. Music isn't bound by such walls. Music is something you listen to, you like it, and that's the end of the story. Apparently though, if you're, let's say a white man listening to reggae, than you are stealing Jamaican music. That makes so much sense, doesn't it?

But seriously. Did I miss the memo that stated you have to be of a certain race to listen to a certain type of music? Because I've been listening to all the wrong music for a veeery long time.

This question was inspired by this lovely young lady. She's truly a unique person. I hope she enjoys my answer to her question. Take a look, and feel free to tell her how you feel her comments offend you :)

Hey I checked your answer out and you are right I'm never seen you answer something like that before as in been so vocal. They are the types of questions I try and stay away from. Idiots like that don't need the attention, if they got 0 ansers maybe they would just leave, but I know that is wishful thinking. I don't really like ansering these questions but since it is you and you do love and respect all kinds of music I will answer. I'm 61 and I've never thought about another man's colour when it came to music. If I liked it I listened to it. And to me that is all that mattered. Even when people answer questions like this and say or Elvis stold this or Jimmy Page stold that, it's way beyong me. Why? cause these people made some of the other racies music more popular, and in some cases brought it new life, and that is the way I look at music, in how is it different for better or worse. I have so many different racies in my collection of music it's like it's a melting pot of music, and man you can't find anything better than that. Rap/country/rock/metal/folk/grunge and so on and so on it''s all music. And I think it's time people got off of their high-horses and listen to music for the sake of music and nothing else.

    sorry for the rant.

    take care

I can not agree with you more dude. It really bugs me beyond belief and I felt this first hand for many years. Back when I was in middle school I actually didn't listen to any rock at all, I only listened to rap then. I probably was called a "wigger" 10 times a day just at school and it used to bug the crap out of me. It probably didn't help that I live in a town that's in the middle of nowhere and seriously 98% white but it was still extremely annoying.

Music has no race and I really wish everyone would understand that. There is no such thing as "White music" or "Black Music"... if there is we would all be back in the 20s when racism was accepted. Anybody should be able to listen to anything they want no matter their race, gender, age, or even what planet they're from lol

Wow that was disturbing. I answered it too of course.

I have been eclectic all my life as I have lived in many countries and been in touch with many different cultures. Enjoying music from all over the world. From Angola and Portugal to Brazil and Mexico....Yugoslavia, Germany, USA, Canada, Sweden, France, Russia......etc etc etc.

I love what you call "black" music, R&B, Motown, Soul, Reggae ( I have had Peter Tosh and Black Uhuru albums since I was 12 years old).

I don't like Rap and Hip Hop though, same way I hate Reggeton. But not because of the color of the persons who listen to it....just because I find it horrid and primitive.

I'm late because the question has been deleted already but i know what you're talking about. People seem to take offense that I'm a black person who loves rock music. I don't like supposed black and ghetto music you know rap/hip hop/r&b etc.. My argument: what law is there that said that I HAVE to like that kind of music? I'd rather stay true to myself and like the kind of music that I enjoy, appreciate, and can relate to than to fit into a mold.

The founders of rock & roll in the 50s included Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Few would deny that Jimi Hendrix was significant in the history of rock. The history of pop and rock involves white music being influenced by black music and vice versa.

you know, I made a video and posted it on youtube a while ago, and it would be perfect to use to respond to this Q (although it was only about metal). some tard made a rant about why "heavy metal sucks", and made up some really stupid reasons, and I made my vid to disprove two of the "reasons" that really got on my nerves: "metalheads are all white people" and "there are no women in metal" my video then showed pics and vids of Asian bands, Krypteria, Wrust, Evile, Sepultura, Sevendust, Dream Theater, Living Color, and Killswitch Engage (would have been nice to know Oceano back then)... then went on to show pics and vids of an extensive list of women in metal, a list which if were to type out... well it would be a long list

    I 100% agree with you

*the Q you were talking about has been deleted, and while I didn't see the Q, it's probably a good thing.

here's the genius who inspired my rant:

I dunno, I've never actually heard anyone say something like that in real life and mean it. The fact she has no answers kind of makes me think she's just a successful troll. I listen to plenty of music that isn't considered my race and I don't get any flack for it. Nor have I ever given any to anyone for their music choice. Music is subjective, I don't get why people complain about what others listen to.

Oh please, that person is not serious.

But, even if she was, music is not really a thing of age, sex, or race; it's mostly about culture. If you live around people that listen to one type of music, there's a good chance you'll listen to that music as well, and I don't see anything wrong with that. But that doesn't mean that you can't listen to whatever you want to listen to.

Yeah, I guess you have a point.

OK, the other question was trolling, but yes, you missed a memo from Miles Davis. I remember seeing him live and having one of the most amazing musical experiences in my life in the 70s. Then I remember reading about him saying that only black people could understand his music. It hurt my little feelings, because I loved his music. Still do. But I don't presume to know more about it than he did. It's easy to say his remarks were racist. But maybe something real was behind them.
