Is it normal for a newly adopted dog to limit food intake?

We adopted a five year-old chihuahua this past Saturday from a local shelter. He seems very well adjusted (sits on our laps all the time, walks well when we take him out for walks and bathroom times, has no problem staying in his crate at night or when we go out, etc); however, he won't really eat the food we put out. He might eat a piece or two from our hands, but he won't go over to the bowl to eat (unless I mix wet food with the dry food). He ate dry food at the shelter, so it shouldn't be a wet/dry thing. We bought Nutro Ultra food for him, so maybe he's just used to eating the crappy food with all the corn filler and byproducts in it? Any ideas on what to do? He's only a five pound dog, so the fact that he isn't really eating makes me nervous. Then again, he's only been here for about 48 hours, so maybe it'll just take a little time. Any advice is appreciated!

Changing homes is enough to set a dog off his feed.

Check his teeth. If he's been subject to starvation at times, the teeth may be wiggly or even decayed. Maybe your food is harder than he's used to. Try adding some warm water to the food and softening it a bit. My dogs always loved dry food mixed with some canned meat. If he continues to refuse to eat, he'll need to see the vet.

He'll eat when he's hungry enough. He may be just getting used to the new home and people and/or getting used to the new brand of food. If it's not the same brand as he was given at the shelter, then he will probably have some diarrhea for a few days until he gets used to the new food. Dogs almost always get diarrhea when they are suddenly switched to a new food (can be avoided by gradually adding a little of the new food with the old food for a few weeks until it is all the new food).

I wouldn't get too worried right now. Chihuahuas are very small dogs, so they really don't need a lot of food either. He can get by for several days without food, but he won't let himself starve if there is food available.

How long have you ever had her? A canine can pass over a week without eating and not go through any unwell effects as long because it has get entry to to water. If the canine is healthful then no it won't starve itself to dying. mixture some moist foodstuff in with the dry and if she would not consume any interior 4 minutes, take it away and furnish it 12 hours later. keep doing this till the canine eats what that's given. NO treats in between foodstuff the two. If the canine has no longer eaten something after 3 days i'd have her checked over via the vet for obtainable enamel, mouth or different problems which would be no longer consumer-friendly to become attentive to via you. do no longer attempt and tempt the canine with all distinctive ingredients. she will have the skill to consume if she is hungry adequate.

Chihuahua's are naturally very small dogs and they don't eat very much, but he doesn't like it. Maybe it tastes bad. And you should switch to something else. Get some food made specially for small dogs. Or, mix dry food with wet food. Wet food has moisture and may help his get it down easier without his hurting his teeth too much. Maybe he has some teeth that are bothering him. If this continues not eating the food, wet or dry by themselves or mixed, for a week, take him to the vet, they should give you some advice. Maybe he is still adjusting. It may take a while.

He's likely just adjusting. If he's eating the mixed food you can continue for now and slowly decrease the wet food as the days go by. You should take any new pet to the vet to make sure everything checks out so when you have him in, if he still isn't eating, ask the vet. :) Thanks for adopting.
