I live in Santa Fe and I love music. I have BAs in Piano Performance, Music History, Music Theory, Human Biology and Nutrition (BS), English, and Corporate Communications. I have a Masters degree in Criminal Jusitice (with an emphasis in criminalistics and forensic analysis). I love living in the mountains (high desert), swimming, hiking, riding horses, yoga, and ice hockey...as far as sporty stuff goes. I love reading, doing crossword puzzles, and watching some of my favorite television shows (Bones, Law and Order: SVU, House, and Glee). I love playing EverQuest. Yes, that is the dork in me. I have a (currently) level 85 bard named Bosendorfer on the Povar (Quellious) server. It's quite fun!

  • Can I use coconut milk without a refrigerator just for the day?

I'm flying home with my son tomorrow (two relatively short flights for a total travel time of six hours). He is allergic to cow's milk and has been drinking coconut milk. I know it needs to be refrigerated, but if I'm opening a new container, how soon does it absolutely need to be put in the fridge? As in, can I open it during the first flight and give him a second bottle a few hours later?

  • Which baby carrier is your favorite?

I'm looking for a baby carrier that has a lot of back support. I'm currently debating between a Baby Bjorn and an Ergo. What is your favorite and why? Our baby is currently three months old and 13 pounds. He is close to being able to hold his head up for extended periods of time. As a side question, what is your favorite baby product that you cannot/could not live without? We are currently looking for entertainment type things (for example, an activity mat). Thanks in advance!

  • What are good types of juicers?

I'm looking for a good juicer for fruits and vegetables. I've never used one before, but I've been told that one of the best brands is Breville. Ultimately I would like to spend no more than $100-150 (I would be willing to spend less if it is a good product, but I don't want to skimp on product to save a few bucks). We will be using it at least once a day, so it should be relatively sturdy. Bonus if it isn't the size of an entire counter, but I do understand that many of them are relatively large. Another requirement is that it is powerful enough that I don't have to run the fruit/veggie and its pulp through 98 times to get the maximum amount of juice possible.

Brand names and models are good--even better if you have product links!

    Thanks!

  • What is your favorite few-toned theme?

I know these "favorite" questions get tedious, but I thought I'd throw one in for fun. I was driving home from an appointment today and listening to the second movement of Beethoven's Symphony 7. I'm sure most of you know that this is one of my favorite pieces (and if you didn't know, just look at how many times I list it as an answer to the "what should I listen to?" questions). But today I was really struck by the beauty of a theme that uses so few notes, and one note repeated so many times, at that.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, the main theme is from approximately 0:11-0:38 on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBfKXHoSvDM

That being said, what are some of your favorite pieces that use themes with either limited or repeated tones?

Also, for S&G, Yahoo suggested that I put this in Beauty and Style...

  • External Recording Device?

Yes, I know that this is not a classical question; however, I was thinking that some of you might use the item I'm describing to record your pieces (and by the logic of the askers in this section, if I'm playing classical music, that makes it classical, yes? LOL). Anyway, in the piano studio on campus, there is a recording device on one of the pianos. It's about the size of a car CD player and mounts below the keyboard. I'm trying to figure out how to use it--just basic functions...record, R channel, L channel, etc. Please tell me that one of you has some experience with this!

  • What Ondine (or Undine) do you prefer?

Not necessarily your favorite, but I find that I have always preferred the Ravel Ondine to the others, mostly because of the musical imagery. In Ravel's, I can actually hear waves crashing and the siren's song. A bit odd, as I prefer Debussy as a composer over Ravel when it comes to most works.

  • Who is your favorite current conductor?

For whatever reason, my favorite conductor right now is Gustavo Dudamel. While watching a bunch of his videos on youtube today, I came across this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vwZAkfLKK8&feature... (let me know if the link doesn't work...I was having issues with it earlier)

Besides this being one of my favorite pieces, I absolutely LOVE the first of the highest rated comments from the 14 year old. Plus, Gustavo always looks like he's having so much fun.

So, who is your favorite conductor?

  • What are Your Thoughts?

While watching what I'll call a YouTube circle today (this is when I originally go to watch one link and then keep clicking on related things in the sidebar), I came across this clip:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRZMJQnSw1s

I have heard them before; however, I've not seen this type of video. It struck me as a sort of minimalistic fascination. So, what are your thoughts on it? Feel free to share any of your favorite YouTube clips on here--especially clips that are quirky and somewhat against the norm of a formal "concert" setting!

  • Does anyone know a good stylist in Santa Fe?

I am looking for a good hairstylist in Santa Fe, NM. I just moved here a month ago and I absolutely HATE going through the whole 65 bad haircuts to find someone good. I generally pick hairstyles that are short and many times asymmetrical. I need someone who can really pay attention to detail and shape. I don't want to have to teach them how to cut my hair over a year's time. It would also be fantastic if this person was good at eyebrows. Does anyone have any suggestions? Sample pricings would be nice as well! Thanks in advance!

  • Is it normal for a newly adopted dog to limit food intake?

We adopted a five year-old chihuahua this past Saturday from a local shelter. He seems very well adjusted (sits on our laps all the time, walks well when we take him out for walks and bathroom times, has no problem staying in his crate at night or when we go out, etc); however, he won't really eat the food we put out. He might eat a piece or two from our hands, but he won't go over to the bowl to eat (unless I mix wet food with the dry food). He ate dry food at the shelter, so it shouldn't be a wet/dry thing. We bought Nutro Ultra food for him, so maybe he's just used to eating the crappy food with all the corn filler and byproducts in it? Any ideas on what to do? He's only a five pound dog, so the fact that he isn't really eating makes me nervous. Then again, he's only been here for about 48 hours, so maybe it'll just take a little time. Any advice is appreciated!

  • Web-Hosting/What do I need?

I have perused the answers given about web-hosting sites; however, many of the links given are now inactive. My question is this: what is your favorite, inexpensive web-hosting site? Also, I'm not sure what features I need when I'm looking at all these sites. The finished site needs to have a homepage with links to four or five other page sections (think: "about," "contact," "blog," "purchase," etc) and have the ability to sell items (which I guess I could do with a link to PayPal or something). What are your suggestions?

  • Middle name ideas...?

Let me preface this by saying that we don't know yet whether we're having a boy or a girl. We do, however, have a girl's name picked out. We can't decide on a middle name for Dimitri. One of our options is Dimitri Elliot.

What middle names do you like with Dimitri?

  • Have any good baby gear suggestions?

So I am 14 weeks pregnant and now that we've made it through the first trimester and heard the heartbeat, we've started registering for stuff. It won't be until next month that we find out the sex of the baby, but for right now, we're registering for what we can.

Here is my question: there is SO much stuff in every category that I'm feeling like I spend all day looking at reviews for one item, just to find out if it's any good or not. I'm looking for recommendations from you guys as far as what you like, what holds up, what is safe, and what isn't $900 per item in the following categories:

    Stroller

    Car Seat

    High Chair

    Swing

These are the four hardest categories for me just because there are so many options. If, however, you have used something that isn't in one of those categories and you think it is a must-have item, feel free to tell me!

    Thank you in advance!!!

  • Piano Music Suggestions?

I have been playing piano for 26 years; however, I have taken the last couple years off. I'm getting back into playing and trying to figure out some good pieces to work on to get my fingers back into shape. The level doesn't really matter, just keep in mind that this is getting me back into the groove, so no crazy pieces that will make my fingers fall off!

Any suggestions are appreciated, and I would LOVE it if you attached Youtube links for any pieces that you can!

To give you some ideas of styles that I like: Alkan, Beethoven, Debussy, John Adams, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Greig...lots more, but my tastes are mostly Romantic in nature

    Thanks guys!

  • Soy-free and dairy-free foods?

I was just told today that I have very high sensitivities to soy and dairy. I don't eat all that much dairy anyway, but until today I didn't realize how much soy is in all of our foods. Does anyone know of any good soy-free and dairy-free foods that are easy to prepare in a residence hall apartment? We have a refrigerator, microwave, and a crock pot. Any help is appreciated!

  • Super Christians?

Just out of curiosity, what is the deal with the hardcore super-christians? This isn't limited to the United States, but it seems like the US is the worst country for this. Why is it that everyone is SO concerned with morality...but not necessarily their own? I mean, why go around bashing everyone else's religion or degree of "religiousness" when everyone else's salvation has nothing to do with your own? I mean, who really cares if little Timmy down the street isn't as religious as you are? I'm sure some of the super-christians will say that it's their duty to tell everyone about the word of god, but i'm pretty sure that the way that some of them go about it, jesus is up there saying, "that's not what i meant..."

  • Factoring Question?

I was helping a friend with a math assessment today and I think that the program the test was in was giving us incorrect answers (and I say this because it was one type of problem that we were missing).

The instructions are to factor this equation:

    r^2+4r-45=0

By my logic, the answer would be:

    (r+9)(r-5)

By the program's logic, the answer is:

    (r-9)(r+5)

But doesn't that, when expanded, become:

    r^2-4r-45=0

Are we doing something wrong or is the program smoking crack?
