Did Washington really say this?

In his first inaugural address:

"No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency;"

Sounds like he's giving God credit for creating and guiding the nation. But I thought the founders weren't religious people?

The very basis of our Constitution is separation of church and state. It's one of the reasons Americans refused to bow down to England's ruler, supposedly put there by God.

That doesn't mean the "founding fathers" didn't have religious beliefs, but realized they had no business dictating the government. That's why we have religious freedom today. Separation of church and state is essential, and the only time a religion would get involved through the justice system would be when the rights of freedom of religion are in danger.

You thought wrong The founders were definitly religious people

Just not religious in the sense you would like to think.

George washington, was a christian (deist) but his religious background

did not dictate a direction for laws, governing the actions of the country

    George Washington-

“The government of the United States is not in any

sense founded on the Christian Religion”

    First Amendment -

"Congress shall make NO law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

    The tready of Tripoli -

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Musselmen; and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."

"the Invisible Hand" does not refer to the god of Abraham per se. Washington was a deist. He didn't believe that a god took the time to interfere in human affairs but he did believe there was something more then what we can see to existence.

"No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States."

So true. But exactly what heavenly power "conducted the affairs of men?" Do you know? The answer may surprise you.

Ask most people and they will answer that God is in control of this world. But that is certainly not what Jesus and his followers taught.

    John, for example, wrote:

“We know we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the [power of the] wicked one.” (1 John 5:18-19)

Jesus said, "Now there is a judging of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out...I shall not speak much with you anymore, for the ruler of the world is coming. And he has no hold on me” (John 12:31-32; John 14:30-31)

Who is the "wicked one?" It is Satan the Devil himself. Do you think that if it were GOD who ruled the world today that it would be in the miserable condition it is? Would the United States and other countries stockpile enough weapons of destruction to completely decimate the entire population of the earth? Would there be starvation on a grand scale such as we see today, where for the first time in history fully one BILLION people are starving? Would there be the constant threat of massive pandemic disease? Would the environment be suffering as it is now, with global warming threatening life as we know it, and earthquakes of unprecedented magnitude destroying cities and nations? John 14:30; 1 John 5:19; 2 Corinthians 4:4)

No, this is not at all what God intended when He created the earth. He created it as a paradise, and he populated it with perfect people who had the potential of never seeing death as long as they kept obeying God as their ruler. But Adam and Eve did not do this. They chose to side with the "serpent," Satan the Devil himself. As a result they became sinners and thus were no longer perfect. They passed their imperfection on to their future generations and so we find ourselves subject to the same death Adam and Eve called upon themselves. (Romans 5:12)

But God loves his human creation and will not have it pass away at the hands of the Devil. He sent his son Jesus to become a "perfect man" like Adam. Then Jesus, in an act of love like none other, sacrificed his perfect life in ransom for the life Adam wasted. Thus ultimate justice prevailed in the universe and as a result humans are no longer under the curse of death that Adam brought upon us. (Matthew 20:28; John 17:3)

We now have the possibility of living forever on a paradise earth again as perfect people, exactly what God intended in the first place! By accepting and following Jesus and by obeying God and decicating our lives to him we can be assured of this wonderful future. (Psalm 37:29)

But first will come the destruction of all that oppose God on earth. The world will be cleansed of those who would disobey him and bring the world to ruin. When will this happen? Nobody knows for sure, but Jesus gave us signs to look for that would indicate the end is near. He said:

“YOU are going to hear of wars and reports of wars; see that YOU are not terrified. For these things must take place, but the end is not yet. “For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be food shortages and earthquakes in one place after another. All these things are a beginning of pangs of distress.” (Matthew 24:6-8)

“...And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14)

“...then there will be great tribulation such as has not occurred since the world’s beginning until now, no, nor will occur again.” (Matthew 24:21)

Sound familiar? Does any time in history match Jesus prophecy more than our times?

Jehovah's Witnesses have now "...preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations." The "Watchtower" is the most widely published magazine in the world; bibles are the number one best sellers over any other books. We feel the end is very near.

Were you surprised to learn who the "invisible hand" who rules the world really is? Would you like to learn more about what the bible REALLY teaches? Jehovah's Witnesses will be happy to provide you with a free book titled, "What Does the Bible Really Teach?" Please ask one of us the next time we knock at your door. They were for the most part quite religious. But they created a secular government. Thank God.

He could just be saying that it seems by a token of luck that the nations became independent. If they were religious.. then what exactly are you trying point out?

He also happens to have said - "The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion".

george washington wasn't a founding father...he wasn't even the first president, john hanson, a maryland representative, was elected president by the continental congress from 1781 to 1782.

george washington even wrote him a letter of congratulations for "being elected president of the united states of america"

washington was the first publicly elected president, and that was mainly because of his involvement in the revolutionary war, not because of his politics.

Nobody said they weren't. What does it matter now anyway? They were living in times when science was no where near advanced as it is today, and religion was far more prominent because of this.

You do realize that there is an "Invisible hand" in economics, right?
