My friendly cat bites me! Any reasons why?
My approx. one-year old cat has a habit of biting my fingers/hand when within a foot of her. She is very friendly and shows no signs of being aggressive or scared. The biting is not a quick chomp; however, it is more of a gnawing-as if to actually eat.
Also she has a scratching habit that is light but very annoying. Especially in the morning, my cat reaches her arm out to tap my arm, neck, cheek, eye... etc. -all while having her claws out. Everyday I am awoken by "friendly scratches"
..does anyone have a reason why my cat is doing this?

As for the scratching in the morning, she wants you to get up and feed her...
Biting, she wants to play with you. If you don't like being bitten, just get up and ignore her when she does that and play with her with a toy so she can bite the toy.
I play with my cats all the time and they are rough. I do get scratches and bites but I don't mind. They do not do it hard enough to really hurt me. Sometimes though, the scratches do feel like paper cuts:) When they bite too hard, I pretend to cry and they stop....

It's a sign of affection but can escalate to actual biting. If you want it to stop just stick your finger gently down the cats throat every time it starts. Not recommended if you have long fingernails.
You should only have to do this a few times before the cat stops biting at you.
As for the morning scratching - EASY - turf the cat out of your bed. Our cats are refused access to our sleeping areas. The dog stands guard at the bottom of the stairs every night and no cat gets past him. He was never trained to do this - he simply does it. They just curl up with and scratch him instead. And then he nips them on the bum.

The "nibbeling" and the touching are a form of groomg they do to themselves and to others they care for. Feel honored/loved, Its how she shows her affection. Again the face patting is an attention getter. She requires something that she feels you need to wake up for..food..water...attention If you don't want her to continue this practice, gently put her on the floor each time and say no. She probably hasn't learned to retract her claws when dealing with humans OR maybe she needs her nails clipped? The nails if not clipped at least once a month get long and will stick out from their protective sheath. PLEASE do not declaw..this is a cruel painful procedure...
I do hope this is helpful. Everything your cat is doing is natural..she loves you..you just have to "teach" her what you like and don't like using gentle positive, consistent, reinforcement. LEW

Totally normal from my experiences. I always know its mealtime when my cats are in my face. My little one especially. I feed them 2 or 3 small meals a day and I don't need to check the clock to know what time it is. He starts with the pads of his feet and if I open my eyes or look at him he sits back very innocently. If I close my eyes or look away, I get little taps with his claws. I love it! My daughter has the same morning wake up with her cats.

Your cat is over friendly if anything. The gnawing is just a sign of how playful it is, which is completely normal for a young cat. The scratching could be solved by getting a scratching post or, if it ever hurts you, by clipping its nails.

She is just being playful since she is that young she will be playful and if you want to were her down by playing with her you can get an old shoe string and drag it across the floor and she will probably try to get it or get a scratching post
