I Dislocated my Kneecap about month ago. How long will it take to heal?

Ok so i was playing basketball when i heard and saw my kneecap completely move to the outside of my leg. i obviously fell after and had to be taken to the emergency room so they could pop it back in for me. i went to my doctor the next day and he told me that i should wear the brace they gave me for 5 weeks and use crutches during that time. he told me that i cant put any sort of weight on it and i Cant bend it.

How long will it take for it to completely heal? and was he right to tell me what he told me because i have like no more muscles in that area anymore.

Update:

oh ahha and one more thing... he told me that after the 5 weeks he is going to give me a different kind of brace. i think thats stupid cause i just had a brace on for the past month and i think it slhould be freee to start walking. What do you think?

Update 2:

omg..i keep forgetting everything. hehe ok...if i get the second brace does anyone know how long ill be in that one?

You'll need about 3 months to half a year for full recovery. The doctor knows best.

You'll be fully healed in 3-5 months after getting the brace.

Could take at least 6-8 weeks to heal. The brace you are in now could be the rigid, immobile variety and the next one might have a hinged knee so you can finally bend it. Usually when you are able to begin bending your knee you will be sent to physical therapy for exercises and strengthening.
