A question about Halloween costumes?

So, we all know that in the USA at least, people use Halloween as an excuse to get dressed up (or dress down, really) and binge drink. And I've already had and read numerous discussions on problematic cultural Halloween costumes ("Savage Indians", vague costumes labeled "Asian" with a crappy kimono and chopsticks, etc), but I was wondering if you've ever seen someone dress up as a holy figure from your religion. If you have, were you offended? If you haven't, WOULD you be offended?

In general, is it offensive to take someone's religion and turn it into a cheesy Halloween costume? If it isn't offensive to you personally, can you see how it would be offensive to someone else?

xoxo,

crapbag

Update:

@Lyss: haha! Good reference. I was thinking about that as I wrote this question.

Hey talk about Halloween offending I'm a Witch (Pagan) Halloween (Samhain) is one of our high days plus who hasn't dressed up as, hung a character of, etc of a Witch? Picture one of your faiths high days taken over and its truthful purpose changed to the one day of the year Evil, terror, and mini bags of candy reign supreme? LOL

Me personally doesn't offend me a bit it actually cracks me up...what does offend, hurt, irate, and down right p*sses me off is the twisted, judgmental, ignorant lying bs posted here by so called "real faiths" now that stuff is offensive!

    Great question btw

Well, there are two different parents to Halloween, the Celts, and religion. They really are the same, but the time period is what differentiates between what I mean, originally, costumes were worn by the Celts on All Hallows Eve to scare off the spirits. They believed that the connection between the afterlife was weakened on All Hallows Eve, thus the spirits could come to our world. The church morphed this, they developed a holiday known as All Saints Day, in order to honor the saints without a day. All Hallows Eve was the night before this, and as with All Souls Day, and All Saints Day, it was celebrated by dressing up as saints, devils, and angels. So, no, I doubt it is offensive. I wouldn't, not really, iconography should hold little importance to my beliefs. Halloween is for fun, and, honestly, I'm sure that if humanity really tried, everything could be construed as offensive.

Halloween is not the only time that costumes are worn. There are many living history events where period costumes are worn.

The was a man who wore a wonderful Bishops costume to Renaissances Fair and I have seen people wear monk robes to the Renaissances Fairs. There are several people who wear priests costumes to the Dickens Fair.

As far as being offended by that or costumes at Halloween no I am not offended, but I think there are better (more fun) costumes for Halloween than any of the ones you mentioned.

I've never seen a kid dressed as Jesus or something on Halloween. But I think some of the most popular costumes are devils and angels.

What I find more offensive are these 7 year old dressed as strippers. That scares me!

My sister and her husband were Christians for awhile (before they got out of it) and they never even celebrated Halloween. She told me it was a sin.

Oooooooohhhhhhh, GREAT question Crapbag! Oh, Heck no.......I am from New York, and as you know, the Villiage always does one KICK-A$$ Halloween parade, and many, many parties, where people REALLY go all out on their costumes! I've seen the POPE, Nuns, Priests, in full dress.....

and some even do Jesus, Nailed to the cross, dragging a real huge cross thru the streets, with the crown of thorns and fake blood, (I THINK it's fake! Ya never know..some of these performance artists, take their craft veryyyyyyyyy seriously.!).......and a few even go for GOD Himself, ....(the Moses, all powerful look.). I've even seen couples doing the Joseph and Mary thing....carrying their baby! Plenty of angels and devils, Satan......Mr and Mrs Satan, you name it.

I ,personally, am offended by none of it....I think it's GREAT.....but yeah, I have heard other peoople in the crowds, yelling out things, (hick tourists)....who think some it , does go a little too far.

Meh.....get a sense of humor people.

What did sorta grind my gears, was seeing people in Osama Bin Laden costumes, the year of 9-11.

That was just in poor taste. I mean, okay......I suppose that's kinda funny, Osama Bin Laden parading in downtown Manhattan to the cheers of the crowds........

as an adult..........okay...........parody and all that.........

but when I saw KIDS going door to door, in Osama masks....dressed as terrorists........that was just truly FOUL.

What parent bought their kid an OSAMA mask? That is just soooooooooooo wrong.

Funny someone said, they would only be offended IF the person dressed as Jesus, started behaving like Jesus.

Hmmmmmmmmm, that's interesting. I use to actually do this schtick, where I was on some website, under the name Jesus Christ, and I pretended I actually WAS Jesus, answering all the questions,

People thought it was hilarious! I got alot of nice emails, saying I was doing a GREAT job, and people really LIKED my answers......(and they indeed, were very Christ like.....with a good sense of humor).....but then one dill pickle, got OFFENDED, and reported me, and I was BOOTED from the site.

One idiot, ruined it for everybody.

So Buddha came back and ripped him a new one! Bahahahahahahahahahaha

    To each their humor.

Where I live now.......the priest was MORTIFIED when I wanted to start up Halloween in this pissant berg......just for fun, for the kiddies.......and he gave me the whole Hell and Brimstone speech.

I nodded politely, and then did as I pleased anyway.

5 years on now...........NOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW he sees what fun it is, and the kids really enjoy it.........so now he wants me to include his apt. on the round of stops next year.!

(No doubt so he can give out, candy crosses or something....and get his licks in. )

But it's nice that he came around and joined the party.

I have seen this, but I went to Catholic school at the time, and it was our little school party... I was definitely not offended.

I don't think I would be offended now; I don't see reason to.

I guess people would be offended if someone were dressed up as a religious figure and did unsavory things while wearing the costume.

    EDIT

I feel so silly... People dress up as Characters from lots of religions for Halloween all the time! The devil's a pretty common character, and he has everything to do with Christianity, right?

Source(s): Halloween always reminds me of the "slut rule" from 'Mean Girls.' :-) great movie, right?

here's some ideas: bo-peep a fairy a marionette doll (with the red circle cheeks, curled hair, a flouncy dress, vivid eyelashes and strings attached of course) a facebook/myspace page (use cardboard) someone from a certain time period 50s,60s,70s,80s(very fun!) or from medieval/rennaissance commonly known fictional charachter or a fairytale character-Rapunzel, etc. This one is pretty cheesy but one of you could string small ceral boxes on a piece of rope then stick forks thru the boxes and wear it around your neck (hence THE CEREAL Killer)get it?? Yeah that one might be to "gay" for you (since 13yr olds who do matching costumes are) but its just a suggestion.

No, I never seen one of those around here.

If you seen my uncle (in late 30's) dressed as a female for Halloween (again, since he apparently did it about three times know), do you think females would be offended?

No, I wouldn't be offended, I think if I was to have children and do that, I should go as a transgendered Jesus Christ, what do you think?

Halloween is a stolen version of a Pagan holiday, so people shouldn't be offended if their god is being customized for the night!

Well Halloween is commercialized now. But it was pretty much created as a day to honor and celebrate the devil and the dead. So us Christians shouldn't really participate in Halloween. But no one should wear a religious costume to make fun of it. If anything they should dress up like it to share their faith to all the nonbelievers that dress up in bad stuff :(

Well what if the costume isn't cheesey? What if someone took a lot of time and effort to make a really nice costume that just so happens to be of a figure from your religion?
