Does anyone have any idea or guess why my cat has been playing in his water bowl?
Does anyone have any idea or guess why my cat has been playing in his water bowl, splashing water around & turning the bowl over? How should I deal with it? It's getting so aggravating especially waking up to go to the bathroom stumbling around & stepping in a puddle of over turned water. I have tried several things to cure is habit but nothing has worked.
I'm gone 14 hours a day so when I come home there is no water left in the bowl. It was cute at first but it is annoying. I haven't tried not giving him water until I get up. Maybe I will try that. Thank you both for your comments.=)
Carol, I don't turn the bowl over, the cat does. Water spreads when turned over. I have tried diff colored bowls & clear bowls to stainless steel bowls. I give him tap & spring water.Milk is not good for cats all the time.

Most cats do not like to eat or drink out of bowls if the sides touch their whiskers. Also, if a bowl is too deep, the cat may take the food out for convenience. A wider, shallower bowl will probably eliminate this behaviour.

Is your cat bowl shinny at the bottom like say a metal bowl? If so many cats see their reflections and can't help but take a swing. If not you must have a cat that likes water or maybe is a clean freak. Try placing the bowl on a pad that soaks up the water or even try placing the water dish in the shower. There are compromises for our fuzzy friends and often they will find something new to do.

Although it is annoying, it is cute! Cats are amused by different things and maybe your cat lies the way the water behaves when being manipulated with his paws. You could always put his water bowl in the bathtub (an appropriate place for water!) or use a mug for him to drink out of. The latter may not deter his curiosity for water though.

for one thing put the water bowl where you won't step on it then. my cat does this because he can't see very well so he pushes the water around to find it. he is 17 years old but now my other cats are doing it and i think they are just copying him. if the water is in a clear bowl they will also do this because they can't see the water and yes they do it as a play thing and also one of my cats also puts the bugs she finds in the water bowl and plays with it.

oh my cat did that too! ok, 1. it might not be enough water for him so hes trying to splash it so he can get it better so i would try filling the bowl higher if its filled to the top then try filling it lower or maybe try giving him milk! try different types of drinks just nothing harmful like try fresh spring water if that doesnt work try milk and look into all sorts of cat drinks because he might not be satisfied with the water he has... sounds crazy i know.. but cats can be picky too same goes with food :)

I have a Maine Coon and they are famous for playing in their water bowls. I bought an ASPCA brand anti-spill water bowl. It has an inverted cone shaped lid. My 20lb cat can't tip it over, works great!!
