Cat + Dog + Baby Gate = Problem?

My husband and I have 2 cats that are allowed to roam the house freely. Their litter box and food is in our laundry room. Well we are getting a puppy here shortly, a dachshund (he is only going to be 10lbs fully grown). We modified a baby gate (we shortened it- to 18 inches), its easy to step over and our 1 cat has no issue jumping over it, but the other cat will stand up to it (it reaches his stomach when he stands, he should easily be able to jump it, he jumps onto our bed and it is much much higher than that), but refuses to jump the gate. What should we do, we need to keep that room locked off from the tiny dog (he is actually smaller than the cats). The cat has been in the laundry room all night, standing at the cat meowing, I feel bad, but he needs to learn... any ideas?

Update:

Yes I know that pet stores sell the pet gates with the cat door, however, the dog is tiny, smaller than that cats. so, if I get a gate like that, it would be pointless. And actually, the cat finally jumped over the gate.

Well, you might put your hand under his rump once or twice to boost him over, but I really wouldn't worry much about it. He's in the laundry room with his food and water. Eventually, he'll get bored enough that he'll actually jump the gate to check out the rest of the house.

There are pet gates that have small doors that a cat can get through, but not a dog. But those aren't going to work for the new puppy, and since he is a small dog, probably not even as he gets older.

You may not like to read this, but your stubborn kitty is actually trying to train you about the gate. He will easily jump when he wants to. They can clear gates that are much, much higher then 18".

You could lift him over a few times so that he knows he is allowed to do it, but really, he is trying to train you.

Sorry, but a cat can jump over or onto almost anything in a house. She will need to let one cat at a time out of a closed room if she is going to use the elimination method. Tell your sister that cats will urinate out of the box many times if they have a UTI, urinary tract infection. They change litter habits, this is how they show pain.

Pet stores actually sell this specialized pet gate made to keep dogs in and allow cats to roam freely. I remember seeing it, I think it has a door or something different than a regular baby gate or dog gate...try looking for it!

here I found it for you:

Try leaving a tasty treat on the other side of the fence and if that doesn't work trjhkjhljkhggcffdghfuyfvvch
