Does anyone know how the VA hospitals work?

My husband is an Army veteran who was wounded back in the early 80's. He's been having health issues, but our co-pay is too high to see our regular doctor. Does the VA hospital charge anything? Does it take forever to get in to see them? He served for our country and was shot, how difficult is it to get a doc at the VA hospital?

Thanks to anyone who may know.

The VA works just like any other hospital - except - you must be a veteran. Your husband is eligible to use the VA. Go to your nearest VAMC Administration office and tell them he is a vet and wants to take advantage of his benefits. Your husband will need his DD214 for proof and may need his last years tax forms to prove income. It is basically free but depending on your income/financial level he may have to pay a copay on meds and visits. It doesn't take that long to get an appointment.

I am a female vet and have been going to the VA for many years and I go every year for a complete phsical which includes pap smear, mamogram, other treatments that I could not afford without it because I have no medical insurance. Please take advantage of the VA! He deserves it!

Just getting into the VAMC is a Fight and then getting Treatment is almost imposable. I had to stay in contact with the US senator Office until to get things done and if using them it was too slow. Before it was over my Father died. Then, My case id even harder because they DO NOT like me. You take your DD-214 to the business office but I have had friends they would not treat because they made too much money. When you involve the US Senators office it becomes congressional., which helps in a way but makes the VAMC mad.. Due to a Nurse failing to follow orred
