What is this black build up under my cat's back claws?

Underneath my cat's back claws is this black build up of something. I can't figure out what it is. The nail seems to grow around it to protect it on both sides. Sometimes it will flake off when I trim her nails.

My cats have that too. If your cat is an outdoor cat, then the buildup is probably from dirt outside.

My cats are indoor cats, and if your cats are too, then it's actually important to get the black stuff out because it can cause an infection. Cut his/her nails, and try and *GENTLY* scrape the black stuff off. Cats have strong nails, and usually won't fall off or anything. So just get the paws clean, and you'll be fine.
