40 Weeks & Not dilated at all? Chances I'll go into labor on my own?

Today I am 39 weeks & 6 days. I had a doctor's appointment and they checked my cervix & it's completely closed. The doctor wants me to come back next week and we'll evaluate how things are going at that point-- She said they don't like to induce unless your cervix is actually open because it increases my risk for ending up with a c-section. If I'm not dilated next week she might try a cervical ripening agent to try to get me to dilate & THEN induce... But she said I could end up going up to two weeks over my due date.

Anyways, my question is this-- Has this happened to anyone else & they went into labor on their own? My doctor said being dilated doesn't mean a whole lot-- That I could still go into labor at any time on my own-- But I feel like if nothing is happening yet that it isn't going to! And I really don't want to have to end up with an induction OR a c-section. I'm just feeling a little hopeless and like this baby is never going to come out on her own.

You don't have any reason to think induction will be necessary. It is totally normal not to dilate until you go into labor.

My cervix was closed, thick and high the day before my daughter was due. 5 days later I was holding her. It was a spontaneous labor, no induction methods were used at all.

Absolutely normal. And this is a good reason to refuse cervical checks in late pregnancy -- they just make you anxious. Until you ARE 2 weeks past your due date, you aren't 'overdue'. It's good to see a doctor who isn't rushing to induce you.

When labor begins you will dilate. Any dilation that happens (or doesn't happen) before that point is meaningless.

I had to have a medicine implanted in me during induction to open up and soften my cervix.

I was in the hospital for 4 days. My son was a week and one day late after due date.

Walk, walk, walk, seriously go to the mall or a walking park gravity helps pull the baby down..Then you and your husband have hot sex since it will be the last time you can atually do it and not worry about getting pregnant again..but the trick is you both have to *** for it to really put you in labor. Good Luck!!
