How do you determine the most efficient way to organize the kitchen?

I recently moved into a new house. As I was unpacking the kitchen, I tried to put things where I thought they'd make the most sense, such as having the glasses and plates in the cabinet closest to the sink. But I'm discovering that my kitchen doesn't flow right. I need to move the glasses and plates because they're actually difficult to get to. The doors only open halfway (meaning the door opens to the point that the door is facing straight out; it doesn't have any wrap around) so I have to lean over the counter, around the door, to get anything out of it.

How do you figure out the best way to organize the kitchen so the flow works for you? I'm struggling with this as I haven't needed to do it in 13 years.

Thanks in advance!

Update:

For those who want to know how my kitchen is set up, I have a trailer with the dinner table in the kitchen.

I have cabinets above my stove, where I have my spices, etc., which does work for me. I have two drawers and lower cabinets between the stove and sink. There are the two under the sink (no cleaning products other than extra dish soap are there as I keep them in my laundry room). On the other side of the sink, I have the silverware drawer (has the dividers built in) and a cabinet underneath. Then you get to the three drawers and cabinets under the island. The upper cabinets are in the corner by the sink.

On the other side of the room, I have an upper cabinet, a drawer (already designated for pet stuff) and a lower cabinet.

How many cabinets and what is the arrangement..Sketch it out for us and give us sizes...Pictures would help too. I'll give you standard set up but that does not necessarily work for your space.

    1. The closest drawer to the sink/dishwasher holds the silver. Lift the basket out of the dishwasher to empty, saves time.

    2. The nearest drawer to that holds small prep items ( measuring cups, measuring spoons, potato peeler, pizza cutter, small grater, and on and on)

    3. The drawer closest to the stove holds the long prep items ( wooden spoons, spatulas, spaghetti grippers, utility fork, tongs)

    4. Any random drawer holds dish towels and spare pot holders.

    5. Any remote random drawer holds tape pens paper pushpins A thread and needle a small hammer both types screw drivers and pliers what nots and I dunnoknows.

    6. A random drawer holds foil saran wrap parchment and ziplocs.

If you do not have 6 drawers be inventive and use a bucket on the counter for the long prep tools and a stacker for the foils and wrap on the bottom door of a cabinet.

If you have more drawers one holds the supermarket bags. One holds the baking only stuff.

If you have over sized drawers they get the pot lids and theplastic waree. ( I don't fuss with the plastic storage stuff when the drawer does not close I stack the stuff other wise I toss it in )

Baking sheets, racks, cutting boards, pizza pans get stored up right in a thin cabinet Or get a seperator.

Pots and pans are stacked nearest the stove in a lower cabinet.

Knives are kept in a block on the counter or sheathed and put in a section of the long things drawer.

    Dishes, Glasses, Cups:

Put them where they will be easiest to put away and grab for serving. Where they will not be in the way if someone is at the sink. Glasses preferably near the fridge. Cups preferably near the stove. Dishes closest to the table.

Spices. The upper cabinet right next to the stove......On a pull out or turntables.

Appliances on the other side of the stove in the lower cabinet. Appliances you do not use often go above the stove or fridge cabinet.

If you do not have a drawer for the plasticwear get baskets that fit in the cabinets.

If your stove has a drawer at the bottom put the pot lids in there otherwise another basket to put them in.

I put my baking stuff in one section and my cooking prep stuff in another.

But again....If your kitchen is laid out differently...This won't work...
