Now let's change this question up a bit...shall we?

Many times people have been asking this same ol' question again and again and again and again and...I've lost count. The famous question that people keep on asking is - "Save the Human or the Dog?" Many people say they would save a human over the dog as the human has more to contribute in life, cannot be replaced unlike the dog, the human's life is more sacred...and so on. Ofcourse I agree that a human's life is much more important than any animal's & I too would save a human over a dog. But let's change this up a bit just for the h*ll of it...Same question but with a slight twist.

You have a next door neighbour who is a bum, has no job, has no family, was jailed for attempted murder/rape/animal abuse/etc but was released 2 months ago, he comes home drunk every night, he curses & gets into fights with other people every once in a while & you had a heated argument with him just a week ago because he threw his trash into your property, he carries a pocket knife with him all the time, he used to be in a gang & used to do drugs...Overall, he can be "quite" a dangerous person.

Suddenly, there was a flash flood in your neighborhood & your dog as well as your neighbour got caught in it. They both are going to drown but you can only save one of them. It's either your neighbour or your dog. So WHO would you save?

I am very very interested to read what everyone has to say...

Update:

This is a serious question.

Update 2:

Everybody gets a TU from me for answering :)

The type of person you just described is the monsters who walk this earth in human form. *IF* I knew, without doubt, he is a monster? I don't save *monsters*. You see, I truly believe in Satan's own creations. This would be one of them.

I also believe there are people walking this earth totally incapable of human feelings. Monsters parading around in the human body.

My question was completely different. You have established something far more detailed.

While I am saving my dog it would give me the opportunity to put a bullet in the monster's head.

Is anyone shocked? Probably. But then again, given the opportunity to rid this earth off all humans who are NOT would be my pleasure.

As much as I respect Greek, I do not believe all *humans* with skewed minds can be saved. If you believe an animal with severely skewed genetics cannot be saved then I feel realizing the same thing about humans is crucial.

This case is difficult. In the other question, I said that there are few people who deserve to die, and there are, I am just not sure it is my decision to make.

Honestly, the only thing in here that may sway the decision is the criminal history.

Being drunk does not necessarily make one an evil person. Nor does not having a job, no family, being a crappy neighbor or carrying a weapon.

Guess i would have to see what I would do in the actual situation.

In case some read my other answer and misunderstood my intentions, I did not mean to offend anyone, the idea was to keep it light. I also didn't mean to say that everyone would change, but I do suspect some might. We never do know how we will act until the time comes. Some of us don't know ourselves as well as some do.

I tend to have a problem with articulation, either coming across too serious/rude or too light.

    add-

To clarify the criminal history, I don't just mean any criminal activity, I mean the ones listed specifically here, particularly rape and attempted murder.

I believe in capital punishment... and it sickens me in this day and age when I see the heinous monsters of society having more rights then the average person going about life trying to make a living and do the right thing.

Years ago (watching the news regarding some huge prison riot where tons of damage was done) I saw some big lug of a prisoner interviewed - the chosen spokesman- screaming about how they "couldn't EVEN get into the gym on Monday's anymore".(???) ..and it actually stopped me in my tracks. Geee... on Monday for the past 30 years I had been rolling out of bed whether I wanted to or not and punching the ol' time clock at work. That prisoners mentality was just revolting!

I do care about the "alcoholic bum, has no job, has no family" but... ... given THIS GUY had an "attempted murder/rape" history and probably got off because of some fast talking maggot attorney... .. I would save my dog.

Theoretically, THIS guy SHOULD probably still be rotting in jail thus making him some warden's headache...not mine. I am to the point in my life where I think our prison system is failing horribly...and too many EVIL people are let out of jail to rape & murder again. Trust me.. I would not so much as look twice if Joran Van der Sloot was my neighbor. I'd throw him my bowling ball and ask him to hold for me.

If it was a normal broken human...who WAS a bum, no job and no family..laying in the gutter urinating on himself ... it would emotionally devastate me...but I would save the human. I have no mercy for certain types of evil people.

God would probably kick my *ss for that decision....but... I'll cross that Rainbow Bridge when I get there.

    .

    ADDED: Legit...

Ms Manners... ..you are soooo sweet. Your response did make me chuckle. You have a very good heart. At times.. I feel as tho' I have no heart at all (when it comes to certain human redemption).

    THE DOG!!

The dog is part of the family so its almost like a human, and besides i understand when you are saying that a humans life is more sacred but that human that you described isn't contributing anything to help the world. We don't need stupid/dangerous people like him walking our streets.I also think that a dogs life is just as sacred, because a dog will always stand by you through thick or thin(mans/women's best friend right?)to me it depends on the human that i would be saving.(EX:Mom Sister people like that)

I'm sorry to say that I don't hold the same hope for human's changing as some others in this section.

I may only be 24, but I have seen seven years of people NOT changing. Having every opportunity in the world to turn their life around and finally get out of a terrible cycle and still choose not to. I've literally seen someone turn down a FREE apartment of their own because they'd 'rather live with friends'.

I don't believe that the a**hole neighbor would turn his life around if you saved him. Sure, maybe he wouldn't stab you when walking by his house, but it doesn't mean he'd care anymore about other people or himself.

I did see Launi's question, and I really didn't feel I could answer it as I don't think I could kill either human or dog. Were it some random person and random dog? Of course I'd choose the dog. But when you bring my own dog into play, I couldn't do it, he means too much to me.

I agree with Memphis that in this kind of situation it would be so instinct driven that I probably wouldn't even consider saving my neighbor, nay, I probably wouldn't even NOTICE the neighbor if my own dog was drowning. I have a personal connection with my dog, I would save him.

I know I'll get loads of TD's, but I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It's doubtful any of us would ever really be in this situation.

I would also like to add, that many of us choose TV's, expensive cars, iPhones, and vacations over the starving children in third world countries. Should it REALLY make a difference that the person dying isn't right in front of you?

  • There was a man in the news recently. He hit a woman with his car. She was alive and moaned in pain. Witnesses helped the man put her in his car, so he could drive her to a hospital. He went home, left her in the car for days and she died. They said she'd have lived if he'd taken her to the hospital. He had no remorse at all.

Even that man..it would be a struggle to not save him, as despicable as the thought of him is to me...does he have any redeemable qualities? Would he repent in a few years?

For me your question makes me really think about how I judge others, more than it makes me think about whether I'd save my dog or not. Like do I believe someone bad is all bad and always will be..that's how I think..until there's a question like this then I have to consider everything.

In the moment though when you have to make an instant decision, I would save my dogs over someone like this man or the one you described.

In general I'd always say save the human.... but I'm sorry, I simply cannot imagine myself saving a rapist.

Potential for change? I'm all for that. But I don't have human sympathy or hope for rapists.

TD me for choosing a dog over a human. I don't care. I don't view rapists as anything worth breathing.

Add: You can reform an addict. A gang member can turn their life around. A violent person can get help changing their ways. You can't turn back the clock & "unrape" someone.

That is the lowest of the low. The bottom of the barrel. My dog is above a rapist.

I say it & mean it. I value human life. I don't value evil.

Since this entire question is hypothetical, I choose to have a hypothetical boat.

I will put my hypothetical dog in my hypothetical boat, and allow my hypothetical neighbor to hang on to the side. I will save both of them (truthfully, I think just about any situation would provide some opportunity to save both.)

He will then, as a result of my saving him, see the error of his ways, give up drinking, and become a model neighbor and citizen. (Why would I care that he USED to be in a gang or USED to do drugs? Really.)

Lest you miss the gist of my answer....I would save the human, "worthy" or not.

    Realistically?

There's a flash flood. I would gather everyone in my household and get the h*ll out of there.

The only reason I would be paying any special attention to neighbors would be if I knew they were elderly. In a fast-paced situation like that, it's almost always everyone for themselves.

Lisbeth Salander would save the dog no doubt :) , and honestly I wish I could say that too, but no matter how much I wish my neighbor would just drown, I guess I can't play god
