Can you recommend some non-superhero graphic novels for a 9-yr-old boy?

My son is 9 and in grade 4. I'd like some suggestions for graphic novels that he might enjoy. Just no superheroes, because we have lots of those.

Some info about his likes/dislikes:

Preferred genres (in this order): adventure, humour, fantasy, mystery, action.

Stuff he loves: the Bone series (he has all of them, incl. prequels etc.), Ranma 1/2 anime (for the silly humour), Diary of a Wimpy Kid (ditto on the humour), Star Wars, Transformers (80s cartoon), Narnia.

And that's about it. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. But no manga please--he likes colour. :)

Try to find J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. I got it when I was around his age and thoroughly enjoyed it. You can probably find it at Barnes & Noble or Borders and it's fairly inexpensive.

Noblesse- it's a korean webcomic read from left to right. It's all in color too which is nice.

He awakens. For 820 years he has slumbered with no knowledge of mankind's advancements and scientific successes. The land which he once knew has become an unfamiliar place with new technologies, attitudes, and lifestyles.

Cadis Etrama Di Raizel (aka Rai), while seeking to familiarize himself with this era, somehow locates a loyal servant of his, Frankenstein, who is currently the principal of a South Korean high school. Rai decides that this high school would be the perfect place to help him learn about the new world. He enrolls, and suddenly becomes the friend of Shinwoo, an immature teenager who is also a master martial artist. But this new world is no safer than the old, and the dignified, bewildered, technologically illiterate Rai finds himself caught up in adventures both ridiculous and dangerous.

This manhwa is a web comic with vertical color panels, so be sure to scroll to the bottom of each page.

    (Summary from Mangafox)

I like this series and have been faithfully reading it since it came out.

it rather relies upon on what she likes. There are 2 significant categories of anime: the rather severe stuff (has a tendency to be gory+extra mature) and the extremely ridiculous intestine-busters. An occasion of a extra severe anime is Neon Genesis Evangelion. something it extremely is extra geared in direction of humour is Excel saga (completely loopy) severe: Neon Genesis Evangelion Noein Akira Roujin Z Ghost interior the Shell thoughts Howl's shifting citadel Tokyo Godfathers My Neighbor Totoro lively Away city night on the Galactic Railroad Steamboy Grave of the Fireflies humorous: Naruto culmination Basket Sailor Moon Ranma a million/2 Outlaw famous individual Paranoia Agent Fullmetal Alchemist (sorry, i do no longer understand too many)

Oh, thank goodness. I thought I was facing another super-hero hater. Anyway, I don't read much other than super hero comics. However, I suggest when he's older (around 18) get "Watchmen" for him. I say when he's older because it has adult elements and is extremely heavy on the psychological side. It requires a fairly educated mind to comprehend. Also, it is set in a very realistic world. It goes far to make the heroes normal people who dressed up with little to no good reasons.

how about some of the mangas that are childish? If hes good at reading, how about One Piece, or Otomen. Go to a bookstore and go to the manga section, you can look at some mangas, see if he would like it. Manga acctully can teach your kid some stuff, i've learned stuff when reading manga and watching anime, plus they do help your kids accept differences, I do suggest Hetalia Axis powers for him. Its a comedy manga/anime that would teach your kid about world history. It made it so fun for me in social studies (im in 6th grade), plus it made me proud to be american/swiss/english, and I used to LOVE wars, hetalia made me hate wars, and love world peace. :3

EDIT: Get him into shonen-ai, it is boys in love, but wouldn't you rather have a son who likes gay boys instead of hating them? He will not turn gay, I love yaoi which is guyxguy sex, and im straight. im fuctioning healthy and I buy yaoi mangas all the time~

oh, just relised u said no mangas xD um sorry >.< Im just a manga and anime geek...

Try the 'Supernatural' graphic novels. There are three out now: "Origins", "Rising Son", and "Beginning's End" (which should be read in that order haha).
