What are some traditional desserts to fix for Christmas?

This is probably the first Christmas that my daughter will actually remember it and I'm hosting for the first time. I want to pick a few desserts to fix for Christmas that will become traditions from here on out. I want to pick things that are very traditional. I'll probably make Lane cake. Any other ideas?

Buche de Noël (Yule log cake) is very traditional, looks and tastes fantastic, and gives you lots of flavouring options so you can change it up a bit in the future while still retaining the tradition.

Basically it's a rolled up cake that you cut and angle, then ice so it looks like a thick branch with snow on it, really looks amazing when you see it, and very memorable. Google it to see what it looks like. Tonnes of different recipes, from the more difficult french traditional recipe, to using a simple boxed cake mix - what makes it special is how you put it together and decorate it.

The most traditional Christmas desserts are English (remember Dickens' "A Christmas Carol").. The first I'd try is plum pudding. Here are a couple recipes for it:

    The other is fruitcake. http://southernfood.about.com/od/christmasfood/r/b...

This recipe looks really good and has a cake-mix base, but if cooking for a child you might want to leave out the apricot brandy!

In any case, whatever dessert you choose will become the tradition, whether it's fruitcake or rice crispy squares!

Indiechi, what can be more traditional than Apple Pie. You have to have a no bake cheesecake. Then there is the the one the kids love around here, individual mini apple turnovers with a little whipped cream spooned inside of them before serving. With our grand children 3 dozen are gone in minutes. There is a couple for your to chew on.

Ever since I was old enough to remember holidays, my grandma and grandpa would come over and make cut out cookies and decorate them with my siblings and I. My grandpa has since passed away but I still remember making cut out sugar cookies with him every time I make them myself.

Also, my mother makes Black-eyed-Susan cookies every Christmas. My dad loves them so much she has to freeze them. I always like to help her make those. It's just peanut butter cookies rolled into a ball and rolled in sugar. Just before they are done baking my mom pushes a chocolate Hershey's kiss into the centers and puts it back in the oven to finish cooking. let them sit for a little while before moving them around.

Hope this helps! Have a great holiday!

I always make a cherry cheesecake and spread whipped topping over it and sprinkle it with green sugar crystals. Whatever you decide, try to make it your own signature dessert, something you can pass on to your daughter for when she has a family of her own.
