Work experience in US: What is the difference between pre-practicum, practicum, internship?
Heya,
I'm an Irish student and I will be spending next semester in an American college. This will involve 3 months work placement (field experience), however I have not been given much info about it yet.
I am finding the terms a bit confusing. What is the main difference between pre-practicum, practicum and internship? How long are they generally? At what stage in their studies would students usually complete these?
I am in the third year of a four year honours degree programme here in Ireland, this will be my second and final work experience. Do you think it likely that this work placement will be known as an intership or a practicum?

It will probably be known as an internship. Summer Internships are during the summer and last 10-12 weeks. You are probably taking a semester long internship that will count as school credit and last the full semester. Internships normally will start your sophomore year ( 2nd year) , but may start freshman year if you have a very high GPA. Internships normally consist of a large project that you complete over the course of the time you are there, however some internships will involve large amounts of busy work.
